Subject(s) Pirates Caribbean Area Fiction. Format Fiction While the card-catalog entry is a form of metadata, it does not address topics such as quality, accuracy, or scale. Well-written geospatial metadata describes these and many more aspects of the data.

Metadata is a component of data • Provides vital information about a dataset • Not a separate entity • Critical component of a complete dataset • Describes data characteristics • Content, condition, quality • Preserves data’s usefulness through time
Metadata is the descriptive data component … RARNUM - unique combination of species, concentration, and seasonality CONC(concentration) = Density species is found at location Season_ID =seasonality code like to the seasonal table Element - Biology group Environmental Sensitivity Index Data Metadata
Metadata updates reflect changes in the data … 1980 HEW Teheran British Honduras Cape Hatteras Light Mt. St. Helen West Germany 2005 HHS & HUD Tehran Belize Cape Hatteras Light Mt. St. Helen Germany

Metadata Background: FGDC • The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) was organized in 1990 • Charged with promoting the coordinated use, sharing, and dissemination of national geospatial data • National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) • Tasked with creating a metadata standard to meet these objectives
The FGDC Standard: CSDGM The Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata "... each agency shall document all new geospatial data it collects or produces, either directly or indirectly, using the standard under development by the FGDC, and make that standardized documentation electronically accessible to the Clearinghouse network.“ Executive Order 12906 Signed by President Clinton (1994)
FGDC: Recognizes Transition to ISO CSDGM will continue to have a legacy for many years International geospatial metadata standards are emerging in the community Agencies encouraged to transition to ISO as they are able to do so
NOAA Data Management Policy • NOAA Administrative Order 212-15 • Environmental data will be visible, accessible and independently understandable to users… • Management of NOAA environmental data will be based upon an end-to-end data management lifecycle… • … approved Procedural Directives inherit the requirements and authority of this policy…
NOAA EDMC Directives NOAA EDMC Data Documentation Directive Outlines Migration to ISO Standards • Documentation of… • Collections • Datasets • Services
Metadata Standards Process step Access constraints entity currentness domain attribute Citation Domain=Real attribute currentness Citation entity lineage Type=“free text” lineage Provide a uniform summary dataset description • Utilize common • Terms • Language • Structure • Defines data elements & values
FGDC Authored Standards will soon be legacy • FGDC-STD-001-1998 Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM) • FGDC-STD-001.1-1999 Biological Data Profile • FGDC-STD-001.2-2001 Shoreline Profile • FGDC-STD-012-2002 Extensions for Remote Sensing Metadata (RSE)
FGDC Endorsed Standards same status as FGDC authored • ISO 19110:2005 Geographic information - Methodology for Feature Cataloguing • ISO 19111:2007 Geographic information – Spatial referencing by coordinates • ISO 19115:2003 Geographic information – Metadata • ISO 19115-2:2009 Geographic information – Metadata – Part 2: Extensions for imagery and gridded data • ISO 19119:2005 Geographic information – Services • ISO 19139:2007 Geographic information – Metadata – XML schema implementation

Hands-On Exercise Reading a CSDGM Metadata Record
Example CSDGM Metadata Record Navigate to this web page: • http://www.ncddc.noaa.gov/hypoxia/products/ Select Tab for 2012 – 2010 Maps and Data • Select Metadata for CTD Locations • Answer questions about dataset using this metadata record Or, direct link: http://service.ncddc.noaa.gov/rdn/www/media/documents/hypoxia/metadata/2012-Hypoxia-Stations.html
Answer these Questions… What is the format of the data? What is the date of the data? How often is the data set updated? Where is the data? What’s the data about? Who can I contact to get the data? Is the data available online? Was any processing done to the data? Do I need any special software to use the data?
CSDGM Metadata Workbook • Defines the CSDGM • Section and element definitions • Domain values Graphical representation of the CSDGM production rules • How elements are grouped • Mandatory elements • Rules for repeatable elements
CSDGM Graphic Representation Metadata 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Identification Information Spatial Reference Information Entity and Attribute Information Distribution Information Metadata Reference Information Data Quality Information Spatial Data Organization Information Legend Mandatory Mandatory If Applicable
Section 8 Section 9 Section 10 Citation Information Time Period Information Contact Information M M / A O
Metadata Moving Forward Transitioning to ISO
ISO Background We are still capturing the same information! • The ISO 19115 strongly resembles the ‘sections’ of the CSDGM • Documents the geographic data -OR –service • Identification • Spatial Reference • Data Quality • Distribution
