Ovaries • Release the hormones Estrogen and Progesterone • Release a mature egg cell – usually one/month • The releasing of the egg cell is called ovulation.
Fallopian Tubes • Carry eggs from ovaries to the uterus
Uterus • Hollow muscular organ • Fertilized egg (baby) will develop and grow • Base of the uterus – cervix • Endometrium – lining of the uterus
Vagina • Birth canal • Hollow muscular passage from the uterus to the outside
Menstrual Cycle – page 476 • Egg matures in one of the ovaries • Endometrium thickens • If the egg is not feritilized, the endometrium breaks down and is discharged from the body. This discharge of blood and tissue is menstruation. • (Kidshealth.org)
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) • Symptoms which occur prior to the start of the menstrual cycle: tension, mood swings, headaches, bloating and irritability.
Vaginitis • A vaginal infection or irritation • Thick discharge,odor, vaginal itching, burning sensation during urination.
Endometriosis • Tissue from lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus • Pain in pelvic area especially during menstrual periods • Can lead to sterility
Toxic Shock Syndrome • Bacterial infection • Usually found in women who are using tampons • Important to change tampons frequently to avoid infection • Symptoms include: sudden high fever, rash, vomiting, diarrhea and dizziness • Can be life threatening
Cervical Cancer • Detected by a pap test
Breast Cancer • Detected by self exam and mammogram • Mammograms begin around age 40 unless there is family history with breast cancer.
