Vocabulary 1.5 The Periodic Table Chastain 2017 On-Level - You need 10 Index Cards
1. The Periodic Table of Elements • The periodic table is an arrangement of the chemical elements. • Ordered by their atomic number (number of protons), electron configurations, and recurring chemical properties.

2. Period • A period is the name given to a horizontal row of the periodic table. • The periodic table has seven periods. • Period 1 contains only two elements: hydrogen and helium.
3. Group or Family • A group (also known as a family) is a column of elements in the periodictable of the chemical elements.
4. Metals • Majority of the elements are metals. • A substance (as gold, tin, copper, or bronze) that has a more or less shiny appearance, is a good conductor of electricity and heat.
5. Metalloid • An element with properties between the typical metals and nonmetals. • They usually have some properties of metal. • (boron, silicon, or arsenic)
6. Alkali Metals • The alkali metals are a group of elements in the periodic table. • They are all in the first column of the periodic table. Hydrogen is in the 1st column but is not in this group. • They are shiny, soft, metals. They are very reactive.

7. Alkaline Metals/Alkali Earth Metal • This family consists of beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, and radium. • These chemical elements occupy the second column of the periodic table.
8. Transition Metals • The elements in group 3-12 of the periodic table. • This is the most familiar metals like iron, copper, nickle, silver, and gold. • Most are hard and shiny. • They are good conductors of electricity.
9. Non-Metal • A chemical element that lacks the characteristics of a metal. • Ex: hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, oxygen, sulfur, and selenium.
10. Inert/Noble Gas • In the right-hand column of the periodic table of elements is a group know as the noble gases. Ex: helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon. .
