CSD Mission Statement • The fundamental role of WCU is to develop a community of scholarship in which students, faculty members, administrators, and staff members learn and apply the products of learning. The mission of the faculty, staff, and students of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is to engage jointly in the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and dispositions to address communication and its disorders, exercise informed judgments, and accept challenges calling for innovative clinical responses. Observation Hours • Prior to graduating it is recommended you get a minimum of 25 clinic observation hours • These can be obtained anywhere (The Clinical Process will give some guided observation hours) and can be counted for ASHA as long as there is an ASHA certified SLP/A • Masterclinician.org • Make sure you keep a log of these hours (log form in located in boxes in student room) • Get a variety of observations

10. ASHA requirements • ASHA requires that you have: • Biological Science • Physical Science • Statistics • Social Science • If you are not sure you meet these requirements see your advisor ASAP

22. Information You Need • Clinic placements will be given out by late-April for summer – fall will be given out by the end of summer session • Most everyone will have a school placement in the fall to coincide with the school age language class • You need to focus on getting clinic hours this summer (adult hours for most) – make sure that you are available to the site • Continue to check your catamount email throughout the summer in case we need to get in touch with you (class time change or room assignment)

24. Remediation of “C” grades • 1st C – required to take a comp in that subject the following semester • 2nd C – automatic reduction in load by 3 hours the following semester (excluding summer) and take a comp in that/those subject(s) the following semester • 3rd C – set out one semester (excluding summer), reapply to program, take comp in that subject the following semester

25. Remediation of “C” • C in clinic – assigned to SHC following semester and will complete a clinical comp in area of weakness the following semester • All comps will be scheduled to be completed by the 11th week of the semester • If you fail the comp you will be required to take the course the next time it is offered – even if you have graduated – your forms will not be signed (for ASHA, state license) until course is retaken and passed

Graduate Assistantships for 15/16 • If you are interested in an assistantship for next year, you must submit a letter of intent and resume (including courses for grades last semester) by Tuesday, March 17th – 5:00pm • Please remember your time will be limited next year as you will have heavier clinic placements (MWF – clinic) for your 2nd year of graduate school • In your letter you should address when you would be available to complete GA hours if your placement is 3x/week
