  4. Basics • “The closer your expectations are to reality the happier you will be.” • Face conflict in a mature way and don’t run from it. • People problems are at the core of most Conflict. • Success is measured not in failures but in what learned from failures.

  5. Core issues • How Should Christian Leaders Think about Conflict? • What Obstacles do Christian Leaders Face in Handling Conflict? • How Do Christian Leaders Resolve Conflict? • The Incarnation: The Supreme Model for Conflict Management & Resolution

  6. Case Studies • A Case Study is an actual event from which we can learn lessons that apply to our own situations. • Read the case and take notes in the margin of your workbook. • Look for the core issues. • Ask the question, “what can I learn from this that will help me in my situation.

  7. Why is this important? • We are involved in Conflict of one kind or the other. • We need to manage conflict and restore relationships • We need to be successful managers of relationships. • We all want to become more effective leaders.

  8. Attitudes Toward ConflictGroup Activity • Group 1 – Read Philippians 4:13 • What do you learn about conflict? Write a statement to share with the class. • Group 2 – Examine this Quote: • “the more leaders care, the more they are set up to fail.” What do you learn from this? • Group 3 – Read this text: Matt 10:34, 35 • What do you learn about conflict?

  9. Remember • Conflict is inevitable • Being naïve does not prepare us for the reality of conflict (attitudes) • Be prepared!

  11. Resolving conflict by Forgiveness • “Forgiveness is God’s invention for coming to terms with a world in which people are unfair to each other and hurt each other deeply, in spite of their best intentions” • “Forgiveness is not forgiving & forgetting.” (Lewis Smedes, Professor – Ethics)

  12. Consequences of notForgiving? • Dyads: List consequences that occur when we don’t forgive. (5 minutes) • Share a consequence you experienced because you did not forgive someone?

Practice - Triads • Select an interpersonal conflict one of the group is experiencing. • Discuss the conflict: • Define/Describe the core issue • Discuss which of the 5 approaches will best help work towards a win/win solution. • Describe the strategy you will use to either resolve or manage this conflict.

  17. The Incarnation Model • The incarnation of Jesus model is perfect for dealing with conflict • Make Conflict management a central focus in your life and work • Examine the concept that Christians are called to the ministry of conflict resolution.

  18. Concluding Comment • Ultimately, Jesus is our Peace BUT this peace is an inward peace we experience in a world of turmoil, anxiety and too often violence. Within this human context its good to remember the words of Jesus for he experienced all and even more than we do. For he himself is our peace who has made the two one and has destroyed the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing the law with its commandments and regulations. Ephesians 2:14

Points to Ponder • In this world we will have conflict • Peace is first and foremost a personal thing between oneself and God through Jesus. • We then become brokers/mediators of that peace in a broken and violent world. • Let us set as our goal and life objective to minimize violence and be arbitrators of Peace!
