Course Description This course is intended to provide the students with a strong intuitive development of logical reasoning skills. This course will focus on more than deductive reasoning and proof. Equally important concepts presented will be the continued development of students’ skills in visualization, pictorial representation and the application of geometric ideas to describe and answer questions about natural, physical, and social phenomena. The study of geometry also encompasses a close relationship with algebra by using coordinate and algebraic means to verify synthetic representations.
OUTLINE of COVERED TOPICS • Logical Reasoning Skills • Properties of 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional Figures • Coordinate Geometry • Angles and Triangles • Geometric Formulas: Perimeter, Area, Surface and Area, and Volume
GRADING • 80% SEMESTER GRADE -- Daily Assignments, Quizzes, Writings, Projects,Tests. • 20% Semester Test (December) • (The May Semester Test is 10% and the Geometry EOI raw score is the remaining 10%).
MRS. GONZALES’ RULES AND PROCEDURES: • Come to class prepared with textbook, Pencil, Notebook with Paper I will not provide these things. • When you arrive to class, begin your warm-up and remain quiet until notes begin. • NO FOOD, GUM, DRINKS (except water) is allowed in the classroom. PERIOD! • All work is to be completed in pencil. Any work in pen will be handed back to be re-written. • Refrain from talking while I am talking. • You have two days to complete assignments. We will discuss this in depth as we work at the beginning. • Do not complain about homework length or difficulty. I will give you more! • All I ask is for my students to try and put forth effort.
MRS. GONZALES’ RULES AND PROCEDURES: 9. Students are not to be behind my desk, in my chair or on my personal laptop for any reason. 10. Students are not permitted to adjust the thermostat. 11. Do not draw on the marker boards. 12. Students are not to leave the room until all trash is picked up off the floor.
Materials needed for ALL my classes: • 3-Ring binder for notes and warm-ups. Loose paper also. • Pencils and Erasers • Scientific Calculator – (TI-30XIIS) Preferred. • Graphing Calculators are not acceptable on the Geometry EOI but if you would like to practice with one you are more than welcome to bring one to class.
Materials Needed for GEOMETRY • Compass • Ruler • Protractor • Graph Paper
1st Assignment • Parent Letter & Syllabus • Should be signed and returned tomorrow.
Write the number of your birth month. Multiply by 4 Add “unlucky” 13 Multiply by 25 Subtract 200 Add the day of the month you were born Double Subtract 40 Multiply by 50. Add the last two digits of your birth year. Subtract a number that is between 10,499 and 10,501.
Day One: CHANGING UNITS OF MEASURE WITHIN SYSTEMS & BETWEEN SYSTEMS • Example: • State which metric unit you would use to measure the length of your pen. • A pen has a small length, but not very small. The centimeter is the appropriate unit of measure.
Conversion Methods • To convert from larger units to smaller units, multiply. • To convert from smaller units to larger units, divide. • To use dimensional analysis, multiply by the ratio of the units.
Conversion Examples. • 4.2 km = _______m • NOTE: There are 1000 m in 1km. • So 4.2 * 1000 = 4200m • 39 ft = ________yd • NOTE: There are 3 feet in a yard • So 39 ÷ 3 = 13 yd.
1st Assignment Parent Letter – Sign and returned TOMORROW!! Conversion of Units WS Due in two days!
