  4. Objective: ________________________________________________________ FLWBATdescribe the religious backlash of new ideas during the Middle Ages in Europe

  5. Agenda: ________________________________________________________ • Review • Spanish Inquisition notes • Let’s talk about torture… • Galileo guided reading • We’re done!

  6. Just a reminder: ________________________________________________________ But not everyone agreed with the Church’s teachings… I’m the Pope… I’m kind of a big deal. Just look at this hat! DOH! WHAT HAPPENED?!? As we talked about before break - (remember then?) - most people in Europe during the Middle Ages were Catholic Christians

  7. Staple it in! ________________________________________________________ Ka-chunk! Ka-chunk!

  8. Heretics: ________________________________________________________ “Heretics” are people who oppose accepted Church teachings. The Popes launched attacks against any people who threatened the Church’s power.

  9. Heretics: ________________________________________________________ Wanna know why Friday the 13th is unlucky? I sent secret letters all across Europe. I charged the Templars with heresy and commanded local officials to put them to death for crimes against God. My orders were executed, across the continent on Friday October 13, 1307. Back in 1307, Pope Clement V believed that the Order of the Knights Templar was getting too powerful and not respecting the Church’s rules.

  10. Heretics! - Muslims in Spain: ________________________________________________________ • Muslims - (sometimes called Moors) - had taken control of much of Spain • After 200 years of attacks, Spain is reconquered and Christianized

  11. Heretics! - Jews of Europe: ________________________________________________________ BUT… after they get rid of the non-Christians, the Church focuses on enemies within its ranks This is also where the “dunce cap” came from. • Jews were blamed for the death of Christ • Some were forced to convert to Christianity or thrown out of their homeland entirely

  12. Spanish Inquisition: ________________________________________________________ Even a holy man will abuse total power if he’s given it. • A group of priests given power to find and punish heretics • People accused of heresy are tortured and killed in huge public ceremonies

  13. Spanish Inquisition: ________________________________________________________ So, how did they get confessions? • Torture was sometimes used by the Inquisition. • Aimed at getting a confession from the accused • Purified the accused through pain

  14. Torture: the Rack ________________________________________________________ Offenders were tied down to a table with their feet secured. A rope tied to their hands was tightened, stretching them.

  15. Torture: Strappado ________________________________________________________ • The victim is suspended by his/her wrists with their hands behind their back • Shoulders would dislocate and the victim would be left hanging for days • John McCain suffered this torture when he was a prisoner of war in Vietnam

  16. Torture: It gets worse. ________________________________________________________ It gets considerably worse from there with accused heretics, witches, or pagans being burned alive, sawed in half, or being bathed in molten metal in order to get a confession out of them

  17. Torture: It gets worse. ________________________________________________________

  18. Torture: It gets worse. ________________________________________________________

USE YOUR TIME WISELY!
