Motivation Open Research Data Pilot in WP 2014-2015 Some projects in Horizon 2020 are part of the Open Research Data Pilot which aims to improve and maximise access to and re-use of research data generated by projects. For the 2014-2015 Work Programme the following areas are participating in the Open Research Data Pilot. • Future and Emerging Technologies • Research infrastructures - part e-Infrastructures • Leadership in enabling and industrial technologies - Information and Communication Technologies • Societal Challenge: 'Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy' - part Smart cities and communities • Societal Challenge: 'Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw materials' - except raw materials • Societal Challenge: 'Europe in a changing world - inclusive, innovative and reflective Societies' • Science with and for Society
Article 29.3 of the Model Grant Agreement Regarding the digital research data generated in the action (‘data’), the beneficiaries must: • deposit in a research data repository and take measures to make it possible for third parties to access, mine, exploit, reproduce and disseminate — free of charge for any user — the following: • the data, including associated metadata, needed to validate the results presented in scientific publications as soon as possible; • other data, including associated metadata, as specified and within the deadlines laid down in the data management plan http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/data/ref/h2020/grants_manual/hi/oa_pilot/h2020-hi-oa-data-mgt_en.pdf
Setting up a Virtual Team for federated open data repository In February 2014, we started an initial investigation that led to the creation of a virtual team with the following goals: • Define a set of requirements for a federated open research data repository to comply with the H2020 data management policy • Identify existing possible technical solutions • Set up a pilot service driven by real world use cases • A business model including a pricing scheme • Costs for open data hosting eligible in EC projects Interest from: • CSIC(ES), STFC (UK), CESNET (CZ), South-Africa Grid Initiative (ZA), GRNET (GR), IIAP NAS RA (AM) https://wiki.egi.eu/wiki/VT_Federated_Open_Research_Data_Repository
Repositories for Open Research Data • as a service • Zenodo (developed by CERN within OpenAIRE) • B2SHARE (developed by EUDAT) • … • software for in-house installation • Invenio (open source, from CERN) • CKAN (open source) • …
Question 1 EGI resource centres have capacity to host large amount of open data Should EGI invest in setting up a federated open research data repository? (re-using current open source software solutions)
Question 2 What approaches would you recommend to move forward?
Thank you! Any question? EGI CF 14, Helsink
