  1. Study of Kuroshio Intrusion and Internal Waves using Moorings and EM-APEX Floats: Effects on Acoustic Uncertainty R.-C. Lien, T. B. Sanford, Y. J. Yang, and S. Jan APL/UW, CNA and NCU Key Oceanic Processes ADCP-TChain Moorings EM-APEX Floats Experimental Plan

  2. Key Oceanic Processes

  3. ? Acoustic Uncertainty Caused by Oceanic Processes Bottom Boundary Layer Surface Mixed Layer To be modified by QPE !!!

  4. ADCP – Thermistor Chain Moorings Internal Tide Jan Sen Fully resolved vertical profiles of u, v, T, (C) High sampling rate over extended period: Kuroshio, Kuroshio intrusion, internal tides, and NLIWs Monitoring upstream conditions of shelf/slope processes NLIWs + Kuroshio

  5. EM-APEX Float • Motional induction (MI) sensors successfully installed on commercial profiling float (Webb Research Corp’s APEX) • MI-derived velocity is v(z) –v*, where v* is an unknown offset • Onboard processing permits EM-APEX to profile while remaining submerged for extended periods of time • Iridium communication link permits bi-directional transfer of large amounts of data and mission changes; can operate in real-time • GPS coupled with Iridium float provides location and allows determination of velocity offset Vertical profiles of T, S, P, U, V; including BBL, SML Mobile capability Real-time two-way communication Long-term operation

  6. EM-APEX in Hurricane Frances Mixing Sanford Real Time T, S, U

  7. Summary of Experimental Plan • Key Logistics • Ships (UNOLS/Taiwan) • Mooring array deployment 07-10/2009 • EM-APEX Floats • 2-3 weeks shiptime during IOP • Radars • CODAR Coordination with other PO components Integration with Acoustic Experiment

  8. Float and Mooring Measurements in QPE Science Issues Kuroshio Intrusion via Canyon and on Slope? Internal Tides in Canyon, Slope and Shelf? Kuroshio interaction? Cold Dome and Kuroshio Intrusion? NLIWs on ECS? Bottom Boundary Layer? Surface Mixed Layer? How do they affect acoustic uncertainty? Measurements T, S, and U in Canyon, in Cold Dome, and on Continental Slope Mooring and Real-time EM-APEX Floats (work with modelers) Deployments Extensive Observations using ADCP-TChain (07-10/2009) Intensive Observations using EM-APEX (09-10/2009)
