Canadian Labour Congress

The Canadian Labour Congress campaigned for a better Canada Pension Plan (CPP) to ensure a better future, especially for the next generation. We believe it is everyone's responsibility to work towards ending seniors' poverty. With an expanded CPP, real people like Jayden, Kendra, and Kyle will receive higher monthly benefits and save more for retirement. Canada's unions have always fought for changes that benefit all workers, and we will continue to work towards building a better and prosperous Canada.

A Better CPP Means a Better Future • The Canadian Labour Congress campaigned for a better CPP because we wanted to win a better future, especially for the next generation. • Canadian unions believe we all have a responsibility to work to end seniors’ poverty. • We campaigned and won increases to the Guaranteed Income Supplement and to keep the eligibility rate for OAS and GIS at 65.

  3. What an expanded CPP means for real people Jayden is a 24 year old fitness instructor. He combines several part time jobs at fitness centres in the Toronto area. His income fluctuates, but he brings in about $27,000, roughly ½ the average wage. He was on track to receive about $480 per month. With our plan he would receive an extra $150 per month. This year he will contribute $1190 to the CPP, with the changes he would contribute another $265 annually.

  4. What an expanded CPP means for real people Kendra is a part-time dental assistant in Calgary. She earns about $35,000 per year. About 2/3 of the average wage. With her current income, Kendra was expecting a CPP benefit of about $695 per month. Our plan would increase that payment to $915 per month. Kendra currently saves about $1560 a year through CPP. Our plan will allow her to add another $350.

  5. What an expanded CPP means for real people Kyle is an electrician in Squamish. He will earn about $65,000 this year. More than the ceiling of earnings covered by CPP. Kyle can expect to receive the maximum benefit of about $1100 per month. Our plan will increase that to about $1470 per month. Kyle will contribute about $2545 this year. With our changes, he will save an additional $950 to total almost $3500.

  6. Why Do Unions Care? Canada’s unions have always worked to make Canada a better place to work and live. We’ve advocated for and won changes that benefit all workers today….such as increases in minimum wages, overtime pay, workplace health and safety, parental leave and protection form discrimination and harassment. We believe it’s everyone’s responsibility to work to end seniors’ poverty and Canada’s unions will do our part to build a better, healthier and vital Canada.
