Physical Properties and Density. What is a property?. Property : a characteristic of a substance that can be observed. Physical Property:. a property that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. Examples: luster

What is a property? • Property: a characteristic of a substance that can be observed
Physical Property: a property that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. • Examples: • luster • malleability: the ability to be hammered into a thin sheet • ductility: the ability to be stretched into a wire • melting point • boiling point • density • solubility
Physical Property or Change? • Cutting paper? Physical change

What is Density? • Density is a quantitative PHYSICAL property of matter • It is a way of comparing “heaviness” of objects • It is the mass of a substance relative to it’s volume (D= M/V)
Which is heavier? • 1Kg of Feathers or 1Kg of Lead?
1 Kg FEATHERS VS LEAD: • Both weigh the same but the feathers will take up a lot more space (volume) than the same mass of lead • Why? • The lead is more dense….
Density calculation • Since density is a comparison of mass to volume these two variables are needed • Density = Mass (g) Volume (mL) or (cm3) D = M V
Calculating Mass: • The mass of an object can be measured using a Balance.
Calculating Volume • Can be easily measured if the object is a regular shape. • Volume of a Cube = length x width x height. • Cylinder = πr2 X height
What about odd shaped objects? Archimedes figured it out….
Calculating volume by Displacement. An object placed into an overflow can will displace its own volume of water which can then be measured. The volume is measured in ml or cc (cubic centimeters)
