Our increasingly visual world is filled with messages that need to be understood. Like street signs or advertisements, or they can be subtle, like the architecture of buildings or the clothes we wear. Visual literacy helps us determine and understand the messages being sent through images. Why is visual literacy important?
Look at the following work of art, “ Spring Allegory” by Sandro Botticelli (1444-1510)
Look and take note of the following details from the painting.
Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty is in the center of the picture, she is represented as a full mature woman. Why does she have a big belly, what does it represent?
These are the three Graces (Goddesses of beauty and the attendants of Aphrodite) , they portray the female virtues chastity, beauty and love. Why are they holding their hands?
This is Hermes, he is separating the clouds and moving the winter clouds away so the spring can come. What do the oranges represent?
This is Chloris before being kidnapped and raped by Aeolus, then she became Flora. Regretting his violence Aeolus marries her and declares her, Flora a goddess. This is represented by the plants coming out of her mouth. Why is she grabbing Flora's arm?
The Blue figure is Aeolus the God of winds, he chases Chloris and kidnappes her, then he fecundates her with a breath. Why is Aeolus represented in blue color and why are his checks inflated?
This is Flora after her transformation, now she is the goddess of flowers and spring. Why is she covered in flowers? Why is she grabbing her belly?
