Overview of the first course IHL • A 13-week course • 10 participants • TP in 2 blocks of 4 weeks • ‘Simulation’: OCT was in different centre to TP tutors: - Communication with TPTs was via email/phone/Skype - OCT read TP feedback and plans after each TP and built a profile of trainees - OCT did all of the ‘stage’ reports in consultation with TPTs - OCT did all the marking, with the TPTs doing shadow marking
Pre-course: Concerns A sense of ‘isolation’ for OCT and trainees The lack of ‘flexibility’ in the course Building rapport and a working relationship with trainees Effective communication with TPTs Absence of ‘experiential learning’
Pre-course: Concerns A sense of ‘isolation’ for OCT and trainees The lack of ‘flexibility’ in the course Building rapport and a working relationship with trainees Effective communication with TPTs Absence of ‘experiential learning’ • OCT worked 2 hours/day on course; F2F tutorials could help trainees • The online CELTA has flexibility of revisiting key units • Rapport building done via ‘live rooms’, discussion forums and emails • Greater objectivity and efficiency in communication • Replaced with wide range of video clips of ‘real teaching’; no apparent impact on TP
