  2. Chemical Compounds • Identified by a Formula: Chemical Formula– gives the actual numbers and types of atoms in molecule or compound Empirical Formula– gives the relative numbers of atoms in molecule (smallest whole-number ratio)

  3. Formula Mass • Knowing the Chemical Formula, we can calculate the Formula Mass Example:Sodium Hydroxide Chemical Formula: NaOH Formula Mass: 22.9898 15.9994 + 1.00797 39.9972 amu • Break formula down into atoms: • 1 Na atom = 22.9898 amu • 1 O atom = 15.9994 amu • 1 H atom = 1.00797 amu
