A Regulatory Framework for Europe Creation a single set of cons. rights and oblig. throughout the EU First step: Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (into force end of 2007) - protection from misleading advertising and other unfair practices Currently: reviewing rules regulating cons. contractual rights (withdraw from contracts etc.) 2008 – creation a single legal tool
Enforcement and Redress the EU Consumer Protection Network of national enforcers – cooperation between enf. authorities - legal obligation for member states Strengthening of redress mechanisms redress – remedy to set right a transaction when some part of it has gone wrong
Informed and Educated Consumers Education and informations = protection against deception Commission’s Citizens’ Agenda(from May 2006) - extending consumer input and influence into competition, telecom., energy and transport policies Monitoring: European Consumer Market Watch – “scoreboard” that compares different consumer indicators across the EU (price, safety etc.)
