Layout • Create a Thumbnail sketch A Thumbnail sketch is a working document using stick figures and boxes labeled text.
Orientation Orientation: Vertical or Horizontal position in which a page is printed The shortest side is at the top of the page. The longest side is at the top of the page.
Page Arrangement • Facing Pages: There is a left & right side • Gutter: Inside margin of a document with facing pages or spaces between columns • Recto Pages: Odd-numbered pages in a document with facing pages • Verso Pages: Even-numbered pages in a document with facing pages • Booklet: Two pages printed front & back on a single sheet of paper
Paper Size • Letter (8.5 x 11) • Legal (8.5 x 14) • Ledger (11 x 17)
Paper Type • Bond—Used in copier or personal printer • Book—Better quality than bond • Text—Very high quality • Newsprint—Low quality & inexpensive • Cover Stock—Heavy stock paper • Coated—Has a finish on it producing better-quality print • Dot Grain—Spreading of ink once it is applied to paper
Paper Folds • Z fold—Divides the paper into thirds when printing on one side • Trifold—Divides the paper into thirds when printing on both sides • Accordion—Divides the paper into fourths • Gatefold—Folds the sides into the middle of a page
