  1. Beam Transfer Systems J.Borburgh, E.Carlier, L.Ducimetière, B.Goddard, V.Mertens, et al. Outline: Brief reminder of LHC activities Plans for “backbone” machines (PSB, PS, SPS) Plans for other facilities (AD, ISOLDE, CTF3) Conclusions

  2. LHC • Presenting only work • requiring access to the machines • with priority 1 (= absolutely mandatory), priority 2 (= highly recommended) • Not discussing work ongoing in parallel for • projects • refurbishment of spares following exchange … competing for same manpower SPS PS

  3. Brief reminder of LHC activities • Completion of staged MKB installation (1 tank = 2 magnets per side) + electronics and controls • Overhaul of remaining 20MKD/ 20 MKB generators and magnet entry boxes • Replacement of a (small) number of MKI as function of progress with mitigation studies and tests on heating, UFOs, … • 2 x TCDQ upgrade to beyond nominal performance • Lots of electronics and controls improvements (HW/SW) • LBDS tests and reliability run to be firmly planned in

  4. 1 LHC: TCDQ • Remove existing 2 tanks (per beam) and girder • Create space and install new 3 tank solution with girder • Consolidation of electronics and controls (split of reference/interlock logic) New TCDQ • Schedule still to be confirmed • Install TCDQ sufficiently robust for 7 TeV and ultimate intensity 2013 2014

  5. 2 PSB: extraction septum BE.SMH • Exchange one extraction septum (preventive) • Consolidation of electronics and controls (including full recabling) • Advance work from LS2 (2 GeV compatible) 2013 2014

  6. 2 PSB: kicker KFA10-20 • Replacement of hydraulic group (ready since 2011) • Consolidation of electronics and controls • Reliability & safety in case of fire • In principle no machine access required 2013 2014

  7. 1 PS: dummy septum 15, SMH16 and SEH23 • Exchange of SEH23 preventive, (w elimination of oil) and SMH16 • Replace feedthrough and connect 3M Fluorinert station • Install dummy septum 15 & provide electronics and controls • Dummy septum 15 will protect SMH16 (MTE) 2013 2014

  8. PS: MTE hybrid kickers 2 • Re-cabling + overhaul of CT electronics and controls , eradication of CAMAC • Overhaul of RSG HV switches + magnet feedthroughs • Compatibility MTE and CT 2013 2014

  9. 1 SPS: LSS1 kickers • Equip MKDV2, MKQH, MKQV with gap shielding • Exchange one MKP kicker magnet + change HV irradiated cables • Change control cables in LSS1+ MKDV electronics, controls & HV power supplies • Beam impedance reduction, consolidation, diagnostics 2013 2014

  10. 1 SPS: LSS2 septa • Dismantling of TPSN and subsequent installation of TPST • Exchange of ZS4, 3 MST and 4 MSE • Consolidate TPST : greater mechanical stability, easier alignment • Preventive exchange of ZS and MS 2013 2014

  11. 1 SPS: MKE LSS4 & LSS6 • Exchange last kicker magnet / LSS4 + PFN retuning + G-64 eradication • Change vacuum gauge / LSS6 (implies full reconditioning) • Beam impedance reduction 2013 2014

  12. 1 SPS: LSS6 septa • Exchange of  3 MST (preventive) • Exchange of  ZSTF (for further studies) 2013 2014

  13. 1 AD: displacement of kicker generators • Moving of full platform into future new building • Re-cabling, renovation of electronics and controls • Replacement of mineral oil by Ester oil • Need to free space for ELENA construction 2013 2014

  14. 1 AD: extraction septum SM05/07 • Open roof of AD • Replace leaking septum by spare, followed by bake-out • Close AD roof and shielding Schedule driven by availability of HE and VSC 2013 2014

  15. 1 Controls upgrade (ACCOR project) • Eradication of LynxOS/PowerPC Platform & MIL1553 from SPS (and LHC) • Renovation of kickers and septa in AD • Migration to FESA & InCA • In principle no machine access required 2013 2014

  16. 2 Otherfacilities (ISOLDE, CTF3) • ISOLDE – motor protection for hydraulics • CTF3 – help with installation of fast feedback kickers (from Oxford) • CTF3 : First feedback/feed-forward tests in 2013 2013 2014

  17. Conclusions • Important share of LS1 work to make LHC equipment fit for 7 TeV and higher intensities. • Alsomany high priorityactivities in the injectors. • 2012 preparation work will be decisive. • Most activities in injectors compatible with presentaccess planning (Except some kicker magnet conditioning in SPS and septa work in region 15-16 of the PS). • Good coordination with and support by HE, EL, VSC, ABP, CO, RP, … essential. • Detailed preparation plannings coming forward. • List of requirements (test times) and constraints (access) being worked out and communicated.
