Metamorphosis • Metamorphosis refers to the way that certain organisms develop, grow, and change form. • Metamorphosis actually means “change”.
Body Structure of Insects • Head: Located on the head of an insect are mandibles, specialized mouthparts, and one pair of antennae. • Thorax: The thorax is composed of three fused segments. Attached to the thorax are three pairs of jointed walking legs. • Abdomen: The abdomen is composed of 9-11 segments. In adult insects, there are no wings or legs attached to the abdomen.
DEFINTIONS TO KNOW: Chrysalis:the protective capsule that the larva encloses itself into. Pupa:stage of complete metamorphosis in which an insect changes from larva to adult. Insect Reproduction Complete Metamorphosis • Includes a pupa stage passed inside a chrysalis. • 4 stages *Egg, Larva, Pupa, & Adult • In complete metamorphosis, the wingless, wormlike larva, encloses itself within a chrysalis, and asses through a pupa stage, in which it changes into an adult. (Holt 693) EGG LARVA ADULT OLDER LARVA ADULT BEGINS TO EMERGE FROM CHRYSALIS PUPA IN CHRYSALIS
DEFINITIONS: Nymph: a juvenile; small adults, but have no wings Molt: to shed Insect Reproduction (cont.) Incomplete Metamorphosis • The egg hatches into a juvenile, or nymph, that looks like a small, wingless adult. After several molts (4-8), the nymph develops into an adult. • 3 stages *Egg *Nymph *Adult (Holt 693) OLDER NYMPH YOUNG NYMPH EGG ADULT
Examples (cont.) NOTE: The mouthparts/mandibles of the different species are adapted for different functions.
