Teach the Word Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2Tim. 2:15 Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. 1Pet. 3:15

  3. Teach the Word Memorization I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.   4. Choose topic or theme. Brainstorm general principles and key words in the theme. Using a chain-reference, concordance or topical bible, research and record all related passages. Read scripture references in context (the word or phrase in the chapter unit). Allow the Word and the Spirit to guide as you develop the lesson—do not force your view, opinion or position. If using supporting materials such as books or articles, test them against the scriptures, not make the scriptures support them. Testeverything.(I Thess. 5:21).   9. The Servant Teacher Introducing The Topic • Announce the topic or title of the lesson. • State purpose or reason for addressing the topic at this time. • State what will be gained from the study, lesson or workshop---this helps the listeners know what to expect.

  10. The Servant Teacher • Discuss lesson format: Lecture format Audience Interactive Small group discussions • If schedule is tight, use lecture format and leave at least 10 to 15 minutes for comments and questions at the end of the lesson.

The Servant Teacher • If schedule is flexible, you can entertain questions during presentation. • If someone raises a question when you are limited on time to cover the issues, kindly ask them to hold their question for the Q&A time period; and be sure to ask them first during that time period.

  29. The Servant Teacher Fielding Questions “ Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know howto answer everyone”. Col. 4:6 “ A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered” Prov. 17:27

The Servant Teacher • If schedule is flexible, you can entertain questions during presentation. • If someone raises a question when you are limited on time to cover the issues, kindly ask them to hold their question for the Q&A time period; and be sure to ask them first during that time period.

  31. The Servant Teacher Fielding Comments or Questions. • Determine if it is a question or comment. • Repeat what they’ve asked, if a question, then answer. • If a comment, listen for the main information, briefly summarize, then expound.

  32. The Servant Teacher Pesky Peggy Peggy answers all the time and almost every time. She has a comment on each aspect of the topic being discussed. Peggy will comment even if you don’t call on her or recognize her raised hand. Peggy pontificates.

The Servant Teacher • Follow Fielding Questions Rules • Acknowledge Peggy’s first and/or second questions or comments, then acknowledge someone else’s comments or questions before going to Peggy again. • If Peggy continues to comment, then say: “Thanks Peggy, that’s an interesting comment.”; then go on. Don’t comment on Peggy’s statement, this will encourage more comments from her.

  34. The Servant Teacher Takeover Trisha Trisha introduces points and topics that you did not mention, but Trisha raises these issues which sometimes invites comments from others and takes you off point.

  35. The Servant Teacher First, try and find something positive to say about Trisha’s comments, but state that the issue she has raised is not one that you had intended to address at this time. State that maybe it is an issue that could be discussed at a later date. As much as possible, it is important to stay on point and address the slated issues and topics.

  36. The Servant Teacher Ethereal Ethel Ethel intends to make a related point, but doesn’t quite make the connection. It is hard to determine if the point is related and you can see that others are confused as well.

  37. The Servant Teacher When a point is really unrelated and you can’t see the connection, don’t try and make a connection. Acknowledge that you are not sure of the point and ask Ethel to try and rephrase or restate her point. Then address the comment.

  38. The Servant Teacher Bombshell Betty Betty makes a personal or controversial point that stuns you and the group. You can see from the group’s reaction that they’re not quite sure what to make of it!

  39. The Servant Teacher Make a comment that the statement is not one that can be addressed at this time and that if Betty will see you afterwards you will address her comment. If you address a very sensitive and controversial issue, it will usually invite several other comments that will take up a great deal of time to handle appropriately. And if you are not confident in addressing the issue, don’t attempt to.

  40. The Servant Teacher Naysayer Nancy Nancy takes issue with the topic being addressed and your comments. She gives her personal opinions and states them with conjecture and much confidence, but they are not supported with scripture or biblical principals.

  41. The Servant Teacher You would not want to have others be misled with misinformation, so ask Nancy to state the scriptural basis upon which she is making her comments. When and if she does, listen closely for accuracy; then comment. Don’t be afraid to differ and correct---remember Col. 4:6.

  42. The Servant Teacher • Repeating and summarizing questions or comments serve to: -- verify that you have heard them correctly. -- clarifies the point and gets the audience more involved. --allows for you to have the individual repeat or rephrase for clarification.

References and Resources Tools for Your Personal Library • An unabridged bible dictionary • An unabridged bible concordance • Bible Handbook Be certain the concordance matches the version of the bible you have, because the concordance is a list of all the words (arranged alphabetically) contained in that version of the bible.

  49. Live Your Creed I'd rather see a sermon than to hear one any day. I'd rather one walk with me than just to show the way. The eye is a better pupil and more willing than the ear. Advice may be misleading, but examples are always clear. And the very best of teachers are the ones who live their creed.

  50. Live Your Creed I can soon learn to do it, if you let me see it done. I can watch your hand in motion, but your tongue too fast may run. And the lectures you deliver may be very fine and true, but I'd rather get my lesson by observing what you do. For I may misunderstand you, and the fine advice you give, but there's no misunderstanding how you act and how you live.   Langston Hughes
