  2. History of Oracle • Larry Ellison creates the “Software Development Laboratories (SDL)” in 1977 • 1979 - Changes name to “Relationonal Software, Inc. (RSI)” and introduces ORACLE V2 • Did not support transactions, but contained some SQL functions • 1983 – new name: “Oracle Corporation” and newer versions follow • 2007 – Oracle v. 10.2.0.1

  3. System Specs • Prior to Oracle 9, Oracle was ported to many platforms. Recently, however, constrained to a smaller range of OS platforms • As of 2006 Oracle was supported by: • Apple Mac OS X • Linux • Windows • Sun Solaris • HP OpenVMS • IBM z/OS

  4. Oracle VS. DB2 VS. MS SQL Server • Oracle and IBM battle for mid-range market (i.e. UNIX and Linux Platforms) • Microsoft more low-end market (i.e. Windows)

  5. Pricing • As of March 2006: • Enterprise Edition: $40,000 per machine processor • Standard Edition: $15,000 per machine processor • Standard Edition can run up to 4 processors but has less features than Enterprise Edition
