Annie Oakley • Annie Oakley was born in 1860 and was formerly known as Phoebe Ann Mosey • She was an American sharpshooter and exhibition shooter • Her great talent & timely rise to fame led to starring role in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show • The show propelled her to become the first American female superstar • born in a log cabin & her parents were Quakers who later make her orphan • She began hunting at age 6 to support family • Met her husband Frank E. Butler in a shooting contest • “Aim at a high mark, and you will hit it.”
HER CAREER • Butler & Oakley joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show in 1885 • She tours Europe before WW I performing for all the monarchs including Kaiser Wilhelm & Queen Victoria • Volunteered for Spanish American War as leader of company 'lady sharpshooters' • TR names his volunteer cavalry “Rough Riders” after wild west show’’s title. • William Randolph Hearst published a false story that Oakley had been arrested for stealing to support a cocaine habit. • She promoted the service of women in combat operations for the United States armed forces
Her Death & Legacy • Oakley continued to set records into her 60s, • She was involved in philanthropy for women's rights and other causes • Staged a comeback and intended to star in a feature-length silent movie • In a 1922 shooting contest the sixty-two-year-old Oakley hit 100 clay targets from 16 yards • Oakley and Butler suffered an automobile accident that forced her to wear steel brace on her right leg. After 1 ½ years of recovery, she again performed and set records in 1924. • Her health declined in 1925 and she died of pernicious anemia • Her entire fortune had been spent on her family and her charities. • Several movies and plays made about her including • “Annie Get Your Gun” • And a TV series show called “Annie Oakley” in 1954
