Celebrating Our InheritanceEphesians 1: 13,14 • What do you know for sure? • Feeling secure about our salvation is an important subject. • Four categories of people: (Bill Hybels, Too Busy Not To Pray) • Those who think they are saved, but aren't. Matthew 7:21-23 • Those we think are saved, but aren't. 1John 2:18-19 • Those who are saved, but don't act like it: Corinthians. • Those who are saved, and they act like it.
If you knew that in 15 minutes you would stand in judgment before the Holy God and learn your eternal destiny, what would your reaction be? • We can have confidence in our salvation. • Review: Paul’s summary of God’s salvation plan. • It involves all three persons of the Trinity: • The Father – the source of our salvation • The Son – the agent of our salvation. • The Holy Spirit – the seal of our salvation.
People have always wanted assurances: • warranties, guarantees, oaths, sworn affidavits, security bonds • Do we need such assurances from God? • God, by His grace, gives us His own guarantee. • While God’s redemption is immediate the full extent of our salvation and promises are still to come in the future. • God gave us a gift: “Holy Spirit of promise”
1. The Seal of Our Salvation • Ephesians 1:13 [NIV] – “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.” • What is a seal? • a. Seals were used to guarantee the genuinenessof a document or asign of the authority it carried.
Esther 3:12 [ESV] – “It was written in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed with the king’s signet ring.” • b. Seals were also a mark of ownership • Jeremiah 32:10 – “I signed and sealed the deed of purchase before witnesses, weighed out the silver, and paid him.”
c. Seals were also used to protect cargo or other things from being opened and damaged or letters from being tampered with. • Matthew 27:66 [ESV] – “So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.” • Revelation 5:1 [ESV] – “Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals.”
i) The Holy Spirit does guarantee the genuineness of our faith: • Romans 8:6 [ESV] – “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” • ii) The Holy Spirit is a mark of our ownership • Romans 8:9 [ESV] – “Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 [ESV] – “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” • iii) The Holy Spirit also protects us. • Romans 8: 13,14 [ESV] – “For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”
Here in our text, Paul is talking about “ownership”. • Ephesians 1:13,14 [NIV] – “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.”
The Holy Spirit is a seal given to believers to demonstrateGod’s ownership on us. • And what triggered this new ownership? • Our response to the gospel of salvation. • v.13,14 the entire process of salvation • It begins with hearing the Word (Romans 10:13-15) • It follows with believing the gospel. • Believe Greek: pisteuo“to put your full trust and your full faith in Jesus Christ.”
The root of the word for “believe” • peitho“to be firmly persuaded to the point that you are willing to abandon and surrender and obey that which you have heard” • Luke 9:23 [ESV] - “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” • Once we have surrendered ourselves to God and truly believe in the gospel and by faith, put our trust in Christ for our salvation God takes ownership of our life. • He marks us with His own seal of authenticity – His Holy Spirit.
2. The Guarantee of Our Inheritance • Ephesians 1:14 [NIV] – “…who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.” • “deposit” A pledge or a down payment that guarantees complete payment sometime in the future • 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 [ESV] – “And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”
The Holy Spirit is God’s “first installment” on our salvation a guarantee that our full future inheritance will be delivered as promised • Our future is SECURE. • Ephesians 1:3-14 is a strong text to support the theology that a true believer can never lose his salvation. • Philippians 1:6 [ESV] – “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”
So what do we know for sure? • If you have put your faith and trust in Christ • You can be sure that you have been adopted into God’ family • You can be sure that you have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus • You can be sure of your salvation • You have been marked with the seal of the Holy Spirit the guarantee of your future inheritance – eternal life in heaven
Ephesians 1:3 – Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. • What a reason to celebrate! • UNITED in • PASSIONATE • SERVICE
