Report 72.0- 2ndQuarter Release - • Johannesburg • 13 August 2013
General International Developments: • Q1 2013 US Trends: Slight decrease. • Newspaper circulation declined again during the six months ended March 31, but the dip was slight, a major change from a few years ago, when print circulation dove sharply every time new data was released. • Weekday daily decreased by 0.7 percent during the reporting period. • Sunday circulation was down more, off 1.4 percent, • The newspaper circ. declines have eased since the AAM adopted new measurement guidelines for 2012, including the addition of digital editions, which include tablet or smartphone apps, PDF replicas, metered or restricted-access websites, or e-reader editions. • News orientated magazines continue to lose single copy sales.
Local Developments: • Marketing Association awakes. • Prompted by the announced intention by NAB to withdraw from SAARF the MA has reacted firmly to the thinly veiled threats to withhold the media owners research contribution. Could this result in clarity in terms of : • “whose money is it? Absolutely, albeit the solution could be a shared funding. • Could this renewed marketer interests spread to other platforms? Probably. • Could we see a completely new SAARF as we go into 2014? Certainly. • Are Marketers going to play a more significant role in shaping AMPS. RAMS, TAMS etc? Without a doubt.
General Local Developments: • TV FTA Explosion of options for 2013 / 2014 • All indications are that SA marketers will be faced with 30+ FTA stations in 2014 and many more on Pay networks. The consequence will be: • Harder to build reach on this medium. • Increased cost of reach. • Opportunity will be created for other high reach media platforms to cash in on the chaos. • OOH Has been under measured. • AC Nielsen has been revealed for under measuring the advertising investment in OOH. • The suggestion is that the quantum is as much as 50%.
