Otago Boys High School • Over 900 students • Known as the boys ‘sporting school’ of Dunedin • Have many top sporting sides that represent the school well provincially and nationally • Largest number of provincial and national sporting representatives of any Otago High School • Participation rates in physical activity are particularly high
Bayfield • Co-educational • 660 students • Sporting achievement fluctuates, each year varies. • More success with individual athletes than in team sports. • Participation rates in physical activity dropping.
Assumptions about Sports Coordinators. • Purely an organisational role • Minimal interaction with students • Easy • Only there to look after the athletes of the school (sport teams/individuals) and to organise school events. • Sometimes unnecessary?
Ultimate Goal • The ultimate goal that a sports coordinator strives to achieve is to increase participation in physical activity and sport throughout the entire school. • HOW? • Give students opportunities to participate in regular physical activity. • Promote a wide range of sports and initiatives. • CHALLENGES. • Time constraints. • Lack of enthusiasm from staff and students. • Availability and quality of resources and facilities. “Limited facilities, equipment and other resources may be perceived as placing limits on what a school can offer in the way of PE and co-curricular physical activity” (Physical Activity for Healthy, Confident Kids, 2007).
Otago Boys High School Helped with the organisation of: • Junior sports awards evening • Collection of trophies from 2009 award winners • Inter-school to Christchurch Boys’ • Distribution and collection of sport uniforms for teams travelling to national tournament week Updating SportsCID Taught a PE class Squash for one of their achievement standards
What We Learnt About A Sports Coordinators Role. Practical and hands on. Regular student and staff interaction. Challenging. Broad, covers a lot of roles. Integral role within a school.

What We Have Taken From Internship. • The role of a sports coordinator is a crucial role within the school and outside of school. • How to manage older students. • Organisational and Administration skills. • Awareness of Sporting initiatives. • “Schools can provide more and better physical activity experiences for their students” (Physical Activity for Healthy, Confident Kids, 2007).
