The Inner City • In this lesson I will • Describe what urban decay is. • Describe the problems of housing in the inner city. • Describe how these problems have been solved by urban renewal.
How do we recognise this area on a map? • Old transport links • Railways, canals, dis-used railways. • Straight roads. • Derelict land. • Tenement, high density housing.
Glasgow’s Inner City Problems • The inner city suffers from urban decay. This means it is run down and in poor condition. • poor housing, • pollution, • derelict buildings, • lack of government investment, • high unemployment.
Tenement HousingWas built quickly to house the huge number of workers that came to Glasgow to work in the ship yards. Built quickly No running water Built Cheaply Shared toilets Poorly maintained Over crowded No waste disposal or sanitation. Disease ridden, rat infested
The impact of Peripheral Housing Schemes • High Unemployment. • Isolation. • Drug abuse. • Gangs. • Violence. • Social deprivation and exclusion. • FAILURE!!!!!!!
Urban Renewal • When money is invested in renewing and improving the conditions in the inner city.
Urban Renewal much better idea???? Re-roofing buildings. Knocking flats together Adding double glazing Fitting indoor bathrooms with hot and cold running water. Urban Renewal Bringing life back to the old parts of the cities!
GEAR Glasgow Eastern Area Renewal 1976 -1987 Involved the local community. More amenities sport centres etc Modernization not demolition. 12 000 new rehabilitated homes. New jobs, industries, businesses Successful!!

Traffic Congestion • Problems. • Increasing car ownership • Grid iron street pattern too narrow. • Only four bridges cross the Clyde therefore congested.
Problems Tackled • M8 ringroad • Clyde Tunnel • Redevelopment of the underground system • Parking restrictions • Out of town shopping • One way streets • Pedestrian Precincts.
Unemployment • Problem • Decline of heavy industry due to lack of coal, iron ore and steel. These could be provided cheaper abroad. • Ship building could not compete on a world scale. • Unemployment was at an all time high 1960’s and 1970’s.
Unemployment Tackled • Major investment in service sector. • SECC, city of architecture 1998. • Business centres resulting in hotel growth. • Glasgow Airport investment and expansions. • Call centre capital of Europe. • New Hotels all over the city.
Social Inequalities • Problems • Rising unemployment in the 1980’s • Industrial decline. • Low cost high density housing. • Unhealthy diest linked to poverty. • Drumchapel life expectancy 60, Bearsden 75. • 49% of Glasgow’s housing suffer dampness.
Social Inequalities Tackled • Government invested money in housing associations to renovate housing stock. Has been a success in Castlemilk. • Still big lack of investment in poorer areas.
