Jobs: Accessibility • Dallas trend of employers moving to the suburban areas • DARTs focus on pollution and traffic congestion • Inner-city residents face significant delays and transfers using DART for suburban jobs
Jobs: Availability • Technology & Machinery vs. Blue Collar Jobs • Albertson’s self scan system • Other business and self check-out • Trend towards eliminating jobs through technology • Effect on inner-city employment
Education: Funding • DISD – Funding from property taxes • Business and private residence primarily in suburbs • Inner-city property taxes cannot cover DISD education expenses
Education: Role Models • Inner-city children lack sufficient role models for education (Hobbs, 2005, p. 1) • Inner-city parental involvement in education (Hobbs, 2005, p. 1) • “Ladies and gentlemen, for goodness' sake, join together. There's nothing at risk about your child, except you. (Hobbs, 2005, p. 1)”
Crime • Dallas has the highest violent crime rate for 7 years (Dallas crime, 2005) • Police Chief Kunkle and remediation efforts (Trahan, 2004, p. 1) • Crime and the impact on Dallas rejuvenation
Crime: Media • Media focus on inner-city crime • Focus serves to reinforce stereotypes and prejudice against ethnic minorities • Exacerbates discrimination in employment and housing
Noel Hypothesis • Culture differences between the inner-city and majority groups • Job competition with the reduction in blue-collar jobs • Inner-city and the radical differential of power
Blauner Hypothesis • African Americans as a colonized minority group • Hispanic Americans as a colonized minority group in Texas • Variances in inner-city culture to majority group culture • Inner-city difficulties due to culture differences
Conclusion • Dominant majority group Objectivist Post Modern worldview • Worldview impact on the inner-city • Self-damaging aspects of the inner-city culture • Reform of both cultures through mindset change in youth
