It is called a closed syllable because a consonant is closing the sound. (with the sound /p/ your lips are closing the sound)
fig/ured • The syllable break is after the consonant - g and before the vowel u. • The first syllable is a closed syllable. The syllable is closed when you make the /g/ sound in the back of your throat. • The vowel in the first (closed) syllable has a short sound.
