When is the last time you heard that from your boss, or when is the last time that you said that to someone who reported to you? • Have you been “dressed down” in front of others, or have you done that to another employee? • Do you do regular performance reviews, or are your subject to them by your supervisors? • When is the last time that you got a bonus, or some modest reward, say, an extra day off, for your work, or when is the last time that you offered these things to an employee of yours?

Realize that we are all different, but we are all the same when it comes to simple things. Take the extra minute to thank someone. If you have a beef with someone’s performance, take it up with them one on one, not in front of others. Figure out ways to help them improve. Remember that a few dollars given for a bonus, or some extra time off, will give you—the employer—a reward in the form of happier, more productive workers, that far exceeds the cost of the benefit.
