  1. Can Charity SPONSOR LINKS BE SPAM TOO?

Adding links that point to a page increases a website’s ranking in the Google search engine and places it ahead of other sites, therefore increasing the number of its potential visitors and customers. However, this can also become a form of spam, known as Link Spamming. And charity sponsored links are sometimes not different from spam links and can get penalised. Charity links are an old form of paid link building where it involves donating to a page in exchange for links (also called charity donation), giving student discounts and sponsorship of websites. Google is well aware of this routine, and such activities got penalised in the past. But it doesn’t mean that all of these are link spamming processes.

Take this for example (this was from a publisher’s question at a webmaster hangout): This specific publisher sponsored a local hockey club, and a thank-you image link for them was put up in the sponsored club’s website. The publisher does not know how to change it. As Google’s John Mueller explained, this is a natural situation and will not cause any problems, nor is this considered to be spam mainly because this was not done systematically to engage visitors for a page rank increase.

  4. So when is a charity sponsored link considered to be spam? According to John Mueller, not all of these are spam, but there are situations when they can happen sometimes. He explains that the qualities of a Sponsorship Spam can be recognised based on the quantity of sponsored sites and clear intent to only generate a link. On the other hand, a sponsored link is not marked as spam if it just sponsors one out of many of its kind and it’s a natural part of the web (Montti, 2018) which is a typical situation when it comes to sponsorships. When we say “A Natural Part of the Web”, it’s almost the same as reciprocal links which happen on ordinary occasions. So it’s natural to generate links for charity sponsorships and scholarship. The main reason why it can go wrong is when these links are for the sole purpose of gaining an increase in page rankings. It’s the same as when people intently send spam email to others just to be recognised and to achieve their attention (the same thing applies to search rankings). This kind of activity is where the quality of quantity becomes a factor to mark the link as spam. 

  5. All kinds of links happen naturally. It’s just a matter of how websites use them. When it comes to search ranking, spammy link building tactics are a no-no. The best advice is it would be better to consider adding no-follow links. Always remember that.
