Pku background information • Not a airborne or contagious virus. • People are born with this genetic condition. • Diagnosed at birth after screening test take place. • Having this genetic condition can have life restrictions to keep diagnosed people from having any health issues occur. • PKU is a genetic condition that basically causes the body not to be able to process proteins as fast as other people’s bodies can.
PKU BACKGROUND INFORMATION • For PKU to take place in someone, they have to have two mutated PAH genes. A child inherits one PAH gene from each parent, so if both of those are mutated then PKU will occur. But if only one parents gives the child one mutated PAH gene then the child will not have PKU.
NO NO FOOD! • People who have PKU cannot eat foods high in protein. So they have to avoid foods like chicken, nuts, milk, eggs, cheese, diet soda, cheese, etc. • But some food s they may eat are low in protein such as vegetables, fruit pasta, bread, cereal, etc.
PKU Facts • 1 in 15-25,000 babies are born with each year in the United States. • Pregnant women who have PKU and go off their diet of low protein foods have a high change of a miscarriage or problems in the fetus. • People who don’t stick to a strict diet will have health issues such as brain damage from the build up of proteins in the body.
Symptoms • Mental retardation, • behavioral or social problems, • seizures, • stunted growth, • skin rashes, • small head size, • and Fair skin and blue eyes
