  6. How NAHB is Greening the Industry • NAHB National Green Building Guidelines • NAHB National Green Building Standard • For more info: http://www.nahbgreen.org/

  7. How NAHB is Greening the Industry… • National Green Building Standard approved in Jan. ‘09 by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). • NGBS - 1st and only third-party approved green building standard for the residential construction industry. • Establishes protocols for certifying green construction benchmarks for energy, water & and resource efficiency and lot design, indoor environment quality and global impact. • The standard allows home builders & buyers to make green choices based on climate and geography • 4 threshold levels – Bronze, Silver, Gold, Emerald • Certified Green Professional – 12 hours of CEUs every 3 years.

  8. How HBI is Greening the Workforce • HBI convened subject matter experts consisting of Builders, Instructors, Academics and Youth Providers • To include green practices and competencies in its Job Corps and PreApprenticeship Certificate Training curricula • AND, to align with the ANSI approved Green Building Standards. • Solar Technician training competencies in final development phase. • In HBI’s role as a member of the Youthbuild Technical Assistance Collaborative we have installed the PACT Green Revision in 60 Youthbuild programs. • 200 craft programs employ green practices

  9. PACT CURRICULUM New edition includes Weatherization and Green Building!

  10. PACT FACTS • Industry-sponsored construction curriculum • Includes 8 trades, plus green building theory and techniques • Tracks competencies – Performance based • Used by more than 2000 trainees • Adapts easily to ongoing community projects • Graduates earn industry-validated Certificate • Includes CD ROM with all materials • Approved for DOL funded Youthbuild

  11. DELIVERING PACT • Appropriate for use with academically challenged • For HBI Projects CRAFT (adjudicated youth), TRADE(adult ex-offenders), HOPE (people with disabilities) and Youthbuild (low income youth) • Includes both theory and practice of home building • Relies on the time-honored apprenticeship approach for learning – classroom instruction + hands on training • PACT assumes “less is more:” • Less emphasis on lecture • More hands-on contextual learning

  12. Earning an HBI Green Building PACT Certificate • Understand the environmental impacts of the construction trades • Identify methods for conserving materials, energy, and other resources • Identify construction’s overall consumption and use of resources • Select alternative tools and tool maintenance for use in green building • Identify alternative practices and methods that take natural resources into account • Recycle, reuse, or dispose of construction materials
