  1. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM A research report, by definition, MUST contain information from other sources. HOWEVER, it is still necessary to use your own words AND document. This is not a lesson about how to plagiarize and get away with it! It is a lesson about how to avoid plagiarism.

  2. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM 1. What is plagiarism?

  3. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM 1. What is plagiarism? Definition: the presentation of information (complete or partial) from a source (printed or non-printed) without documentation

  4. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM 2. What is a quote?

  5. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM 2. What is a quote? ANYTHING that you copy word for word from any type of source is a quote and must be presented in quotation marks and documented. (REMEMBER, a quote is not just words that came out of someone’s mouth!)

  6. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM 3. What is documentation?

  7. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM 3. What is documentation? Documentation is providing information about where you gathered information. ALL INFORMATION FROM SOURCES (quotes and paraphrased) MUST BE DOCUMENTED.

  8. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM 4. What is paraphrasing?

  9. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM 4. What is paraphrasing? Paraphrasing is putting ideas from a source into your own words. THIS DOES NOT MEAN JUST “STIRRING IT AROUND OR FLIPPING IT OVER!

  10. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM Documentation is accomplished in two places: 1. Body or Text notes – specific information about specific sources 2. Bibliography – a comprehensive list of ALL sources used in the report

  11. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM Using the article, “The First Day of the Games, March 25th,” evaluate the following sentences. Identify both plagiarism and paraphrasing.

  12. On the 25th of March, the day of the national celebration, they celebrated with great resplendence. THE FIRST DAY OF THE GAMES. MARCH 25TH The following day dawned more serene, the day in which the official inauguration of the Games was to be held. It was the 25th of March, the day of the national celebration, which probably since it had been adopted as the national day, had not been celebrated with such great resplendence. The movements of the crowds were indescribable, from the early hours in the Stadium and Hermes Street and in Constitution Square, all of them festively decorated. At every moment the cheerful sounds of the various philharmonic bands, from Zakynthus, Leucas, Laurium, Patras etc. echoed everywhere. The visit of the Royal Family with their foreign guests and their retinue to the Metropolitan Cathedral for the doxology, and their return was made triumphantly midst the most enthusiastic cheers. 20. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM NOTE: VERBS and ADJECTIVES are the words most likely to take you into plagiarism. Make sure you use your own vocabulary.

  21. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM Friends Christian School Plagiarism Policy I. DEFINITION Plagiarism is the presentation of information (complete or partial) from a source (printed or non-printed) without documentation.

  22. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM Friends Christian School Plagiarism Policy II. PHILOSOPHY It is the English Department’s desire to identify the presentation of non-documented information and to alert the student to the potential dangers of plagiarism, not to determine student intent. As a middle school, our primary purpose is to prepare students for the challenges of high school. Understanding and avoiding all forms of plagiarism is a necessary preparation for their academic futures.

  23. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM Friends Christian School Plagiarism Policy III. CONSEQUENCES Obviously, there are varying degrees of plagiarism. Therefore, the consequences also will vary based on the extent of non-documented information or language. • Misuse of Language – This is the lowest level of plagiarism. It involves intentional or unintentional use of exact words or phrases in student work. While there are a limited number of words in the English language, if a student has used undocumented vocabulary or sentence structure that is atypical of previous work, the teacher may request to see the source. If misuse is confirmed, there will be a deduction of points from the student’s grade on the specific assignment, not exceeding 10%.

  24. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM Friends Christian School Plagiarism Policy • Extended Use of Language – This is the next level of plagiarism. It involves the presentation of extended sections of non-documented information in student work (an abundance of atypical vocabulary, multiple sentences, or entire paragraphs). Again the teacher may request to see the source. If extended use is confirmed, the student will receive a zero on the specific assignment.

  25. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM Friends Christian School Plagiarism Policy • Blatant Plagiarism – This is the highest level of plagiarism. It involves the reproduction of a report or essay entirely from another source (book, web site, another student’s work, etc.) Confirmation of this level of plagiarism results in the student receiving a zero on the specific assignment, plus disciplinary action to be determined by the administration.

  26. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM Friends Christian School Plagiarism Policy Having read and understood this policy on plagiarism, we will make every effort to avoid any of its forms in the preparation of the research report.
