  4. GENERAL Read the flow Use the wind Straighten the bends

  5. STARTS Pre-Start • Listen to the briefing, note the start order • On the water early and warm up • Position on the start line to best advantage for speed and direction of flow and 1st bend Post Start • 100% for first 200m then look for a “marker” and settle back to 90% on their wash

  6. UPSTREAM/DOWNSTREAM TACTICS Upstream • Stay out of the current • Easier to drop someone – more difficult for them to overtake • Use any eddies – careful crossing the eddy line • Paddle past the crown of a bend before crossing using ferry glide Downstream • Straighten the bends but stay in the middle third

  9. TURNS Inspection A “proper” turn Inside v outside Plan ahead Avoid collisions Good exit is crucial

  10. WASH HANGING Side wash Stern Wash V wash In Groups

  11. OVERTAKING • Rehearse in training • Move out wide and then accelerate back down the wash and peel away • Use the inside of a bend if possible • Trap the overtaking boat on your wash – gradually increase speed and keep them close

  12. THE FINISH • Avoid being responsible for the last effort • Time your effort to make use of the final bend • Do not go too late or too early
