  2. Election of 1988 • George HW Bush (R) defeated Michael Dukakis (D) • Americans with Disabilities Act 1990- made it illegal to discriminate against the handicapped and every public place must be handicapped accessible

  3. Crisis in the Persian Gulf • Aug. 1990- Iraq invaded Kuwait claiming its oil wells • U.S. & U.N. troops moved into Saudi Arabia • January 1991- Air Force attacks Iraq

  4. Persian Gulf War

  5. Operation Desert Storm • Feb. 1991- Forces invade and defeated Iraq in 3 days • UN placed sanctions over Iraq • Many criticized Bush for not removing Saddam Hussein from power • U.S. occupation in Saudi territory furthered the hatred of Americans

  6. Bush Presidency • Good president who had great ratings in Feb. 1991 • Economy took a downturn after the war and Bush was blamed for the problems • Also had to raise taxes to offset the huge national debt that was created by Reagan

  7. Bush v. Clinton (1992) • Bill Clinton (D) called for “time for a change”and defeated Bush • 3rd Party- Ross Perot won 19% of the vote • Bill Clinton became the first of the Baby Boomers to become president

Clinton Presidency • Family and Medical Leave Act allowed for workers to take unpaid leave for family/medical emergencies • Brady Bill- fed. effort to regulate handguns • 1994-Republicans “Contract With America” won Congress • Clinton undercut the Republicans by adopting many of their proposals • Welfare Reform Act- reduced welfare

  9. Clinton had to deal with ethnic issues in Bosnia and Kosovo and supported NATO’s air strikes • Late 1990s was a tech boom with the internet and other products • Silicon Valley hub of computer and technology development • Immigration became an issue especially with illegals

  10. North American Free Trade Agreement • NAFTA- goal was to reduce trade barriers between the U.S./Canada/Mexico • Tariffs were eliminated • Many companies relocated factories to Mexico b/c of lower wages • People criticized NAFTA b/c of a loss of American manufacturing jobs

Impeachment and Acquittal Whitewater Land Scandal further tarnished his presidency Clinton accused of sexual harassing Paula Jones while governor of Arkansas While testifying in the Jones case it was rumored that he had sexual relations with an intern while president He denied the intern (Monica Lewinsky) allegations while under oath

  13. Impeachment Cong. accused him of perjury (denying the intern in court) & Obstruction of Justice (trying to influence others and conceal his relationship with the intern) Congress controlled by Republicans and the impeachment proceedings were politically motivated.

  14. House voted to impeach the president Senate- failed to convict the president of any wrong doing Pres. Andrew Johnson and Clinton only presidents to be impeached but not convicted.

  15. 2000 Election Al Gore (D) vs. George W. Bush (R)- very close Gore won the popular vote but Bush won the electoral vote Florida ballots were very controversial because of the hanging Chad's Supreme Court stepped in and ruled Bush the winner

  16. Hillary Clinton- 1st First Lady elected to Senate (D) NY People called for election reform b/c of the 2000 election Sept. 11th attacks have changed our country forever Dept. of Homeland Security was created after 9/11 and goal is to stop terrorism

  17. U.S. Goes To War • Soon after the 9/11 attacks the U.S. attacked al-Qaeda forces in Afghanistan • War in Afghanistan is the longest military conflict in U.S. history • War in Iraq 2003- U.S. invaded Iraq b/c they supposedly had weapons of mass destruction (WMD) • U.S. never found any weapons

  18. Changes After 9/11 • Security on airlines gets tighter • USA Patriot Act- federal law that gives the govt. the right to spy on anyone • Many people felt the Patriot Act violated our 1st Amendment Rights

  19. U.S. quickly defeats the Iraqi Army but spends years trying to stop the guerrilla violence • Saddam Hussein was captured, tried and then executed. • War led to lots of protest in the U.S. and hurt Bush’s presidency • Iraq War is viewed as another Vietnam

  20. 2004 Election Pres. George W. Bush (R) vs. Sen. John Kerry (D) Very close election that went back and forth More money was spent on the 2004 election than any prior election The term “Swing States” refers to states that decided the election becomes popular.

People have become more critical of the Electoral College Bush cut taxes to stimulate the economy Hurricane Katrina- devastated the city of New Orleans and the govt. was criticized for such a slow response 2006- Democrats won the House and Senate Nancy Pelosi becomes the first female Speaker of the House

  22. 2008 Presidential Election Barack Obama (D) defeats John McCain (R) for the presidency and becomes the first African American president Sarah Palin was the 2nd female in history to run for VP Billions of dollars was spent on the campaign

  23. Economic Collapse Sub prime mortgages helps lead to the greatest economic collapse since the Depression Stock market loses almost half its value and dips into the 6,000s Unemployment reaches 10% Trillions of dollars of wealth and retirement are lost

Govt. offers huge bailouts to banks and automakers to prevent another depression People criticized the govt. and Wall Street Deflation- prices for goods drop significantly and people are able to buy more for their dollar. Tea Party- 3rd political party rises in 2010 and calls for a reduction in taxes Republicans gain control of the House of Representatives in 2010

  25. 2012 Election • Obama defeats Mitt Romney (R) for the presidency • Over $7 billion dollars is spent on the entire 2012 election • Country is seriously divided politically • Economy slowly coming back

  26. Conclusion • Both Bush Presidencies were marked with war and economic problems • Clinton presidency experiences a great economy but tarnished by his indiscretions • U.S. is still a world power but has led to more terrorist attacks • 9/11- everything is different
