Placement Year The Student’s Perspective
Introduction • Personal experiences on placement year • What worked well • How it could have been improved • Ideal scenario • Time at the end for any questions
Settling in • Supervisor meets student on first day • Introduce to other members of staff • Welcoming department • Friendly/approachable staff • Guided tour of main places he/she needs to find in the building • Good induction • A timetable showing location and member of staff training them • Folder with departmental information (local protocols, dress codes etc) • Hand student over to a member of staff supervising student initially • Placement ‘buddy’ / mentor
Throughout placement • Timetables – structure to training • Individual projects • Tutorials • Training on e.g. RITC (tutorial) • Logbook (IRCP) - print out copy • Ensure staff are aware students need training • Study time is timetabled • Admin time (if needed for letters etc)
Appointments • Observe student before allow them their own appointments • Take into account that some patients can be difficult for students to deal with • The student needs to gain confidence with more straightforward cases before tackling more complex ones • Useful to know someone available for queries / problems
How am I doing? • Students need feedback • Essential so that the student can become more confident in procedures • Allows us to be aware of how to improve/what to work on • More training (timetabled) just before assessments
Conclusions • Students supervision needs change over the course of a placement • Observe the student • Give guidance and feedback • Ensure IRCP is regularly updated • Be approachable!
