In this novel, the Watson family travels to Birmingham, Alabama while the civil rights movement is in full swing Attribute: The setting of the story and objects show it is historical fiction. Attribute: The novel is historical because the places and some events are real. Title: The Genre of this book is Historical Fiction. Attribute: This novel is fiction because the characters are not real people. Attribute: The setting of the story and objects in the story show it is historical fiction. “ got the pants up and said ‘ A guy just came by and said somebody dropped a bomb on Joey’s church’” (183) “ Dad went out to try and get the Brown Bomber started. That was what we called our car. It was a 1948 Plymouth that was dull brown and real big.” (6) “ until a week later when Dad brought home the TT AB-700 in the Brown Bomber.” (99)

Attribute: The novel is historical because the places and some events are real. “ ‘ Awww, Momma…’ and she kept her hands and most of all she kept on talking more and more southern-style” (166) “ Momma was the only one who wasn’t born in Flint…. She always blamed him for bringing her all the way from Alabama to Michigan.” (2) “ like someone had set off a people magnet, it seemed like everyone in Birmingham was running down the street.” (184)

The three of us were in my and By’s bedroom.” (134) “ Grandma Sands called a couple of times and told them that the police thought two white men drove by in a car.” (191)

  6. The Watsons Go to Birmingham- 1963 was a good example of Historical Fiction. The Watsons go to Birmingham is a good example of Historical Fiction because it showed a real event in the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church on September 15th,1963 but all of the main characters were fiction. Also it showed objects that really did excitest in the 1960’s. It showed what life was like during the Civil Right Movement without any of the real Historical Figures being mentioned.
