NEHEMIAH TELLS THEM ABOUT THE WEIGHTIER MATTERS OF THE LAW SUCH AS JUDGMENT AND MERCY. (NKJ) THE ALTAR WAS FINISHED IN THE SECOND YEAR OF DARIUS READ: EZRA 3:2-3 2 Jeshuathe son of Jozadak and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and his brethren, arose and built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God. 3 Though fear had come upon them because of the people of those countries, they set the altar on its bases. And they offered burnt offerings on it to the LORD, both the morning and evening burnt offerings. (NKJ)

JEREMIAH 52:12-14 12 In the fifth month, on the tenth day of the month (which was the nineteenth year of King Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, who served the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. 13 He burned the house of the LORD and the king's house; all the houses of Jerusalem, that is, all the houses of the great, he burned with fire. 14 And all the army of the Chaldeans who were with the captain of the guardbroke down all the walls of Jerusalem all around. READ: 2 KINGS 25:25-26 25 It happened in the seventh month that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the royal family, came with ten men and struck and killed Gedaliah, and the Jewsas well as the Chaldeans who were with him at Mizpah. 26 All the people, small and great, and the captains of the armies, arose and went to Egypt; for they were afraid of the Chaldeans. I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed cattle. I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs or goats. 12 When you come to appear before Me, who has required this from your hand, to trample My courts? 13 Bring no more futile sacrifices; incense is an abomination to Me. The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the calling of assemblies-- I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting. 14 Your New Moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates; they are a trouble to Me, I am weary of bearing them. (NKJ)

Why have we afflicted our souls, and You take no notice? In fact, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and exploit all your laborers. 4 Indeed you fastfor strife and debate, and to strike with the fist of wickedness. You will not fast as you do this day, to make your voice heard on high. 5 Is it a fast that I have chosen, a day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush, and to spread out sackcloth and ashes? Would you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

READ: ISAIAH 58:3-7 6 Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; when you see the naked, that you cover him, and not hide yourself from your own flesh? (NKJ)

When they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I will not accept them. But I will consume them by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence. READ: JEREMIAH 22:21 21 I spoke to you in your prosperity, but you said, I will not hear. This has been your manner from your youth, that you did not obey My voice. (NKJ)

JOSHUA 10:40 40 Joshua conquered all the land: the mountain country and the South and the lowland and the wilderness slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded. THE LAND SOUTHWEST OF JERUSALEM? JUDAH? WHEN DID THEY INHERIT THIS LAND?

READ: JEREMIAH 17:26 26 They shall come from the cities of Judah and from the places around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin and from the lowland, from the mountains and from the South, bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and incense, bringing sacrifices of praise to the house of the LORD. READ: JEREMIAH 32:44 44 Men will buy fields for money, sign deeds and seal them, and take witnesses, in the land of Benjamin, in the places around Jerusalem, in the cities of Judah, in the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the South; for I will cause their captives to return, says the LORD.

Let none of you plan evil in his heart against his brother.

  29. QUESTIONS: ZECHARIAH 7:8-10 WHAT DID THE LORD WANT THEM TO DO? READ: ISAIAH 1:17 17 Learn to do good; seek justice, rebuke the oppressor; defend the fatherless, plead for the widow. READ: EZEKIEL 45:9 9 Thus says the Lord GOD: Enough, O princes of Israel! Remove violence and plundering, execute justice and righteousness. Stop dispossessing My people, says the Lord GOD. READ: MICAH 6:8 8 He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of youbut to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? (NKJ)

HOSEA 12:6 6 Soyou, by the help of your God, return; observe mercy and justice, and wait on your God continually.

  34. QUESTIONS: ZECHARIAH 7:11-12 HOW DID THEY RESPOND? READ: JEREMIAH 8:5 5 Why has this people, Jerusalem, slid into a perpetual backsliding? Because They hold fast to deceit and they refuse to return. READ: JEREMIAH 11:10 10 They have turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers who refused to hear My words, and they have gone after other gods to serve them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken My covenant which I made with their fathers.

  35. QUESTIONS: ZECHARIAH 7:11-12 HOW DID THEY RESPOND? READ: JEREMIAH 17:23 23 They did not obey nor incline their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear nor receive instruction. (NKJ) READ: JEREMIAH 32:33 33 They have turned to Me the back, and not the face. Though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not listened to receive instruction. (NKJ) READ: EZEKIEL 5:6 6 She has rebelled against My judgments by doing wickedness more than the nations, and against My statutes more than the countries that are all around her. For they have refused My judgments, and they have not walked in My statutes. (NKJ)

You have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction. They have made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to return. (NKJ) READ: EZEKIEL 11:19 19 I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within them. I will take the stony heart out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, (NKJ) READ: DANIEL 9:12 12 He has confirmed His words, which He spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us a great disaster. For under the whole heaven such has never been done as what has been done to Jerusalem. (NKJ)

READ: ZECHARIAH 7:13-14 13 Therefore it happened, that just as He proclaimed and they would not hear, so they called out and I would not listen, says the LORD of hosts. 14 But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they had not known. Thus the land became desolate after them, so that no one passed through or returned; for they made the pleasant land desolate. (NKJ)

  38. QUESTIONS: ZECHARIAH 7:13-14 13 Therefore it happened, that just as He proclaimed and they would not hear, so they called out and I would not listen, says the LORD of hosts. WHAT HAPPENED? WHO WOULD THEY NOT LISTEN TO? HOW WOULD THE LORD RESPOND TO THIS?

READ: PROVERBS 1:27-28 27 When your terror comes like a storm and your destruction comes like a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come upon you. 28 Then they will call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me. READ: JEREMIAH 11:11 11 Thus says the LORD: Behold, I will surely bring calamity on them which they will not be able to escape. Though they cry out to Me, I will not listen to them. READ: JEREMIAH 11:14 14 Do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them. For I will not hear themin the time that they cry out to Mebecause of their trouble.

READ: ISAIAH 1:15 15 When you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you. Even though you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood. READ: MICAH 3:4 4 They will cry to the LORD, but He will not hear them. He will even hide His face from them at that time, because they have been evil in their deeds. (NKJ)

WHAT HAPPENED TO THEIR PROMISED LAND? WHO MADE THE LAND DESOLATE?

  42. QUESTIONS: ZECHARIAH 7:13-14 WHAT DID THE LORD TELL ISRAEL? READ: LEVITICUS 26:33 33 I will scatter you among the nations and draw out a sword after you. Your land shall be desolate and your cities waste. (NKJ) READ: DEUTERONOMY 28:64-67 64 The LORD will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other. And there you shall serve other gods, which neither you nor your fathers have known-- wood and stone. 65 Among those nations you shall find no rest, nor shall the sole of your foot have a resting place. But the LORD will give you a trembling heart, failing eyes, and anguish of soul. 66 Your life shall hang in doubt before you. You shall fear day and night and have no assurance of life. (NKJ)

  43. QUESTIONS: ZECHARIAH 7:13-14 HOW WILL THE LORD PUNSIH THEM? READ: JEREMIAH 7:34 34 I will cause to cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalemthe voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride. For the land shall be desolate. (NKJ) READ: JEREMIAH 15:14 14 I will make you cross over with your enemies into a land which you do not know. For a fire is kindled in My anger, which shall burn upon you. READ: JEREMIAH 16:13 13 I will cast you out of this land into a land that you do not know, neither you nor your fathers. And there you shall serve other gods day and night, where I will not show you favor.

  44. QUESTIONS: ZECHARIAH 7:13-14 HOW WILL THE LORD PUNISH THEM? READ: JEREMIAH 17:4 4 You shall let go of your heritage which I gave you. And I will cause you to serve your enemies in the land which you do not know. For you have kindled a fire in My anger which shall burn forever. READ: JEREMIAH 23:19 19 Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD has gone forth in fury-- a violent whirlwind! It will fall violently on the head of the wicked. READ: JEREMIAH 44:6 6 My fury and My anger were poured out and kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. They are wasted and desolate, as it is this day. (NKJ)

  45. QUESTIONS: ZECHARIAH 7:13-14 WHY DID THE LORD PUNISH THEM? READ: DEUTERONOMY 28:47-50 47 Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and gladness of heart, for the abundance of everything, 48 Therefore you shall serve your enemies, whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in need of everything. And He will put a yoke of iron on your neck until He has destroyed you. 49 The LORD will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 A nation of fierce countenance, which does not respect the elderly nor show favor to the young.

Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, will bring them against this land, against its inhabitants, and against these nations all around, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, a hissing, and perpetual desolations.
