The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Paris in 2015 set the objective of nations to: • Keep increases in global temperature below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels. • Increase the ability to adapt to the impacts of climate change and foster climate resilience in a manner that maintains food production. • Put money into and incentivise initiatives to address these issues. • ERA is working to address some of the climate change challenges from COP21 drawing on the expertise of leading institutions in the Midlands working alongside industry.
Enabling EnvironmentThermo-Catalytic Reactor, Tyseley Energy Park Thermo-Catalytic Reactor • Full scale demonstration of converting biomass and plastic wastes from households and industry into transportable biofuels • With applications spanning use in vehicles, combined heat and power Partnership • University of Birmingham is working directly with the Fraunhofer Institute, Webster and Horsfall and the Energy Capital to develop an innovative TCR process Impact • Support in the delivery of the Birmingham Thermal Belt – delivering green hydrogen, green fuel and green power for the city
Enabling EnvironmentHydrothermal Carbonisation Plant, Immingham First such plant in the UK • Investigate how to convert waste streams into value-added fuel products for domestic and industrial applications • Producing carbon-neutral fuel Collaboration • Once completed, the HTC facility will be operated by CPL Industries • CPL Industries are working directly with ERA researchers Exploitation • Investigate suitable replacements for fossil fuels in home heating products and other potential developments in replacement of coking coals in foundries and smelters
Enabling EnvironmentTrent Basin Community Energy Scheme, Nottingham Community Energy Test Bed • Full scale demonstration of an integrated energy system using both solar and thermal ground source energy generation • Powered by Europe’s largest community battery (2MWh) Partnership • Direct co-investment from Blueprint Regeneration • Other partners include Innovate UK’s Project SCENe (the University of Nottingham, Loughborough University, AT Kearney, SmartKlub, Siemens, URBED, Slam Jam, Sticky World, Solar Ready). • The project is supported by Nottingham City Council Impact • Demonstrate technology and business models are commercially viable, acting as blueprint for other community energy schemes across the UK
Enabling EnvironmentEnergy Innovation Centre, Warwick University Energy Storage - Batteries • The Energy Innovation Centre is a world-class facility at Warwick University, for battery research across the R&D process from materials and electrochemistry to application integration and recycling. The facilities support test, development and scale up of new batteries. Application • The Energy Innovation Centre has a wide variety of uses in the: • Automotive industry: passenger cars, motorsport, haulage, public transport • Other sectors: Grid/static, portable, wearable technology, aerospace, marine Impact • Working with industry to develop a new generation of high performance batteries designed to be more economic and stable, yet boast higher energy density levels than those currently available on the market
