Prefixes • Prefixes and added to the beginning of words. The word that is created from a prefix and a root combines the meanings of both its parts.
Roots • The root is the foundation on which a word is built. It carries the word’s core meaning, and it is the part to which prefixes and suffixes are added.
Suffixes • A suffix is a word part that is added after a root. After, adding or changing a suffix will change both a word’s meaning and its part of speech.
Prefix Examples • Bi –meaning two as in bimonthly. • Pre- meaning before as in preview. • Sub – meaning under as in submarine.
Suffix Examples • -able meaning able or likely as in loveable and readable. • -ful meaning full of as in wonderful. • -ist meaning one who as in artist.
Root Examples • Fort meaning chance as in fortunate. • Spec meaning to look as in spectacle. • Meter meaning measure as in diameter.
