Context Clues • You can use context clues to help you find the meaning of an unknown word. The context of a word is the words or sentences nearby. Authors will often include synonyms, definitions, descriptions, or other information that will help you figure out a word’s meaning.
Sample Context Clue Question • The play had a terribly long prologue, so I was halfway asleep before the first scene even started . • A. finale • B. nonessential part • C. extension • D. introduction
Become a Context Clue Expert • All readers bump into words they don’t know while reading. But it’s not always possible to look up words in the dictionary. Sometimes a dictionary isn’t handy. Other times, especially when you’re into an exciting mystery or adventure, you just don’t want to stop. Get in the habit of searching for the clues that authors leave. Theses are called context clues.

Definitions and Restatements • Look for words that define the term or restate it in other words. • Example: The appalling condition of the starving dog filled Ana with dismay and shock.
Examples • Look for examples used in the contest that reveal the word’s meaning. • Example: Potters, weavers, and other artisans donated their products to the crafts fair.
Synonyms • Look for clues that indicate an unfamiliar word is similar in meaning to a familiar word or phrase. • Example: His guilt and regret showed that his remorse was real.
Antonyms or Contrast • Look for clues that indicate an unfamiliar word is opposite in meaning to a familiar word. • Example: The shiny, new sports car seemed out of place in front of the dilapidated house.
Cause and Effect • Look for clues that indicate an unfamiliar word is related to the cause or is the result of an action, feeling, or idea. • Example: After skipping breakfast and lunch, Yolanda was famished.
Context Clues Think of words your can’t figure out with context clues as delicious, special challenges that will be a treat to learn.
