Excerpt fromThe Sociopath Next Door: The Ruthless vs. the Rest of Us Imagine - if you can - not having a conscience, none at all, no feelings of guilt or remorse no matter what you do, no limiting sense of concern of the well-being of strangers, friends, or even family members. Imagine no struggles with shame, not a single one in your whole life, no matter what kind of selfish, lazy, harmful, or immoral action you had taken. And pretend that the concept of responsibility is unknown to you, except as a burden others seem to accept without question, like gullible fools. Now add to this strange fantasy the ability to conceal from other people that your psychological makeup is radically different from theirs. Since everyone simply assumes that conscience is universal among human beings, hiding the fact that you are conscience-free is nearly effortless. You are not held back from any of your desires by guilt or shame, and you are never confronted by others for your cold-bloodedness. The ice water in your veins is so bizarre, so completely outside of their personal experience that they seldom even guess at your condition.

Sigmund Freud Please take notes
Freud • Core of a person’s personality is set by age 5 or 6.
Unconscious • Psychological part of us. • We are unaware of it. • Childhood conflicts. • Controls our behavior. • Can be “tapped into” with the help of a psychoanalyst. • Free association – person says first thing that comes into his/her mind.
Let’s try to tap into our unconscious… • Partner up with a neighbor & sit on the ground together • Decide who is the “therapist” and who is the “client” • Client will make him/herself comfortable (lie down, lounge, relax) • Therapist will read the 1st word (on the handout) to the client. • Client will then respond with the first thing that comes to mind. • Repeat process until you’ve gone through all the words.
Repression Need/Desire Guilt Push into Unconscious
Libido • Internal forces that seek discharge. • Discharge relieves tension
Map of the Mind Id • Contains our basic needs and drives. • Libido • Unconscious • Emphasis upon aggression and sexual desires.
Map of the Mind Ego • The “self” • Allows controlled id expression. • Pays attention to reality and monitors what is going on in the environment.
Map of the Mind Superego • Provides guilt or pride. • Controls the Ego (which controls the Id).
Can You Spot the Liar? • According to Freud the unconscious slips out whether we want it to or not. • So a liar can always be spotted.
Can You Spot the Liar? • Arrange yourselves into groups of 3-4 students. • Each group member will share his/her most embarrassing moment. • You must select one group member who will create a fictional embarrassing moment and lie to the class. • Your group will present (the embarrassing moments) and the class will vote on who is lying.
