Buck Lake Elementary Media Center • Buck Lake’s media center is open for students every day during school hours. In addition to a large collection of fiction and nonfiction books, our media center also has computers with software and Internet access (with parental permission), magazines, newspapers, puzzles, games and other resources for students to use. Some teachers sign up for a weekly time to bring their whole class to the library to check out books and browse, while other teachers regularly send groups of students to enjoy the resources in the library. • Students may check out books for two weeks and books may be renewed. There are no fines for overdue books, but students with any overdue books are not allowed to check out another book until the overdue book is returned or brought in for renewal. Books that are lost or damaged must be paid for, the replacement and processing cost, before the privilege of checking out books is restored. Children can check out the number of books that corresponds to their grade level; they can’t wait to be fifth graders and check out five books! • We also host a Book Fair in the fall which is a fundraiser for the media center as well as an opportunity for students and their families to purchase books for your home libraries.
Buck Lake Music Program This year the music program at Buck Lake is under the direction of Mrs. A. C. Rivers, a full time music specialist. The music program combines the love of sound and the love of music making in such a way that children can participate in their own musical education and personal growth. My ultimate goal is the enrichment of student’s lives by providing experiences which allow the student to be creative, to listen, and to perform both vocally and instrumentally. Kindergartens through fifth grade students are also exposed to musical works of various historical periods. Music reading and writing skills continue to be a central focus. All students are encouraged to be creative through dramatics, art work and musical performance on instruments. The development of our singing voice is also an essential musical skill that we strive to improve each year. My theme for this year is exploring our history through patriotic songs.
Buck Lake Art Program • Mrs. McDowell teaches art to all grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. • Mrs. Kautz teaches art to students in the Second through Fifth Grades. • Each 6 weeks the Special Area schedule changes. Students in grades 2-5 will switch art teachers after the first semester. Our emphasis is on educating a well-rounded individual through developing skills and attitudes about art and humanities in our world. The BIG IDEA this year is “community”. Students will discover that artists get their ideas from the world around them. We will be looking at our human communities, (self-portraits and people in our lives) natural communities (Florida environment), and the built environment (architecture)
Buck Lake Elementary Physical Education Program All students in grades K-5 will attend Physical Education throughout the school year on a six-week rotation schedule where they will come once or twice a week for 45 minutes each. The following is a brief description of the skills and activities your child will participate in during their class time. • Kindergarten and First Grade : These students will participate in activities that involve space awareness, movement concepts, manipulative skills and basic motor skills such as throwing, kicking, volleying and striking skills. • 2nd and 3rd Grade : These students will participate in jumping rope, aerobics, dance and sport skills such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, frisbee, flag, hockey, and racket skills. • 4th and 5th Grade : These students will participate in jumping rope, aerobics, dance and begin to incorporate strategies while playing games using the sport skills learned in previous years.
