Declaring Support for the Arms Trade Treaty 18 May 2012 Presented by Allison Pytlak, Control Arms
The Control Arms coalition has been promoting three declarations in support of the Arms Trade Treaty: The Interfaith Declaration in Support of the Arms Trade Treaty The Global Parliamentarian Declaration on the Arms Trade Treaty Medical Alert for a Strong Arms Trade Treaty www.controlarms.org/supporters
The Declarations are important because they demonstrate how diverse and widespread the support for a strong arms trade treaty has become and engage new constituencies in our campaign. www.controlarms.org/supporters
How will the declarations be used? • International: • They will be presented at the United Nations at the start of the ATT Negotiating Conference in July 2012 • National: • As leverage in campaigning and advocacy • Can be referenced in media; high profile signers may give interviews • Support from MPs in particular can have long term value for treaty ratification and implementation www.controlarms.org/supporters
Is a moral call from religious leaders and faith-based organizations to negotiate a strong treaty • Open to all religious traditions • Launched in September 2011 • Has been signed by around 80 religious leaders and 70 organizations, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu (as of 17 May) • Heavy support from Christian communities, but growing support from Muslim organizations and leaders The Interfaith Declarationwww.controlarms.org/interfaith www.controlarms.org/supporters
Recognizes the role of MPs as advocates, lawmakers, guardians of the people’s trust and moral individuals • Launched in October 2011 • Has been signed by 1,200 MPs and from 53 countries (as of 17 May) • Lead organizations include Parliamentarians for Global Action • Most support has come from Europe, followed by Africa, Asia and Central America The Parliamentarian Declarationwww.controlarms.org/parliamentarian-declaration www.controlarms.org/supporters
Written from the perspective of those who dedicate themselves to “preserving life and promoting health” • Launched in December 2011 • Has been signed by over 1,400 medical professionals from 57 countries (as of 17 May) • This initiative was initiated and is led by International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War as part of their “Aiming for Prevention” Program to involve doctors in preventing armed violence The Medical Alertwww.controlarms.org/medical www.controlarms.org/supporters
While the overall number of supporters is impressive, there are still some countries and regions where they have very little or no support. YOU CAN CHANGE THIS! It only takes one phone call, one email or one meeting to make the ask. www.controlarms.org/supporters
Suggestions for successful outreach: #1: Start local and use your networks - do you see a doctor or go to a clinic? Do you attend religious worship? Ask those you know to sign first. Perhaps they can share it with their peers and colleagues. #2: Be aware of others who have already signed. This gives credibility and clout to your request. #3: Re-affirm that their signature matters. It will be presented to decision-makers and is seen as a vital part of our campaign. www.controlarms.org/supporters
