Manpower, Cost and Schedule Masahiro Morii, Harvard U. Manpower Cost and Deliverables Schedule Manpower, Cost, Schedule
Executive Summary • Adequate manpower has been identified • UK cost £212K awaits PPRP approval • US cost $142K + 1.5 engineering FTE • Significant (~$30K) uncertainty in ZPD FPGAs • Aim to install in 09/01/02 • TSF schedule ~2 months late • ZPD schedule just in time Manpower, Cost, Schedule
Manpower – UK Manpower, Cost, Schedule
Manpower – US physicists Manpower, Cost, Schedule
Manpower – US engineers Manpower, Cost, Schedule
Deliverables • Want to keep 1 spare + 1 in test benchwhen 1 is being repaired Type X and Y areinterchangeable. Manpower, Cost, Schedule
Cost – TSF • TSF cost is paid by the UK funding • Pending PPRP approval Manpower, Cost, Schedule
Cost – ZPD • Cost is dominated by the FPGAs for the AE • MegaBus prototype tests the on-board bus technology (LVDS vs. single-ended) • 1.25 FTE needs to be paid by the project Manpower, Cost, Schedule
ZPD Algorithm Engines Baseline design • Prices quoted for “when volume production starts” = Nov–Dec 2001 • Size and # of FPGAs affect cost greatly • More FPGAs for timing margin +$27k • Larger FPGAs less likely but even more costly Manpower, Cost, Schedule
Cost – TSFi, ZPDi, GLTi • 0.25 FTE needs to be paid by the project Manpower, Cost, Schedule
Total Cost 2 special 9-U VME creates for system tests Manpower, Cost, Schedule
Schedule • Goal: install at BABAR on 9/1/02 • Take advantage of summer shutdown • August ’02 will be spent in system tests • Connect all components and run simulated data • All deliverables must arrive by August ’02 • Test bench must be ready, too • Requires prototypes of all components to arrive as early as possible June ’02? Manpower, Cost, Schedule
Schedule – TSF • Current schedule later than ideal • PPRP approval in Oct ’01 • Partial prototypes in June ’02 • Full production no later than Aug/Sept ’02 • Integration into BABAR in Oct ’02 • Earlier schedule being worked out • Must save ~2 months Manpower, Cost, Schedule
Schedule – ZPD et al • ZPD production schedule OK • Full prototype built by 6/4/02 • Build 2 for parallel testing at Harvard/SLAC? • Full production by 8/6/02 • Board-level functional testing included • TSFi, ZPDi, GLTi and cables likely OK • Much easier than TSF and ZPD • Must set schedule nonetheless Manpower, Cost, Schedule
Schedule – Fallback • Install new crates for TSF/ZPD in BABAR • Next to (not replacing) existing TSF/PTD • Split fibers from DCH if possible • Feed new and old systems at the same time • Commission while taking data • Almost decouples upgrade from shutdown • Even if fiber splitters don’t work, switching will require only ~1 shift Manpower, Cost, Schedule
