  4. Purposes of Punishment • Retribution: “an eye for an eye.” Instead of individuals taking revenge, society takes the role of punishing offenders.

  5. Purposes of Punishment • Deterrence: punishment will deter the offender from recidivism. It will also serve as an example to others.

  6. Purposes of Punishment • Rehabilitation: convicted persons wil be helped to change their behavior and become productive members of society. Educational and counseling programs are designed for this purpose.

  7. Purposes of Punishment • Incapacitation: while in prison the offender is not a threat to the safety of the community.
