Theory is systematically organized knowledge thought to explain phenomena. • Theories provide a basis for thinking systematically about complex problems, such as understanding the nature of educational organization. • enables us to describe what is going on, explain it, predict future events under given circumstances and think about ways to exercise control over events
Behaviour Pattern A (hard) Bureaucratic Behaviour Pattern A (soft) the traditional view / the factory model the most common ideal of organization world wide • Five Bureaucratic views: • Maintain hierarchical control and close supervision of those in lower ranks; • Establish and maintain adequate vertical communication; • Develop clear written rule and procedures to set standards and guide actions; • Enforce clear plans and schedules for participant to follow; • Add supervisory and administrative positions to the hierarchy of the organization as necessary to meet problems that arise from changing conditions confronted by the organization.

4 Systems (Likert) four categories of management systems which are descriptions of conditions that may be found in schools • Theory X - System 1- Management is seen as having no trust in subordinates System 2 – Management has condescending confidence and trust in subordinates System 3 – Management see as having substantial but not complete trust in subordinates • Theory Y – System 4 – Management is seen as having complete trust and confidence in subordinates Least effective Most effective
