Lives Objectives • Introduction/adaptation of tested and new value chain interventions for targeted value chains/areas (value chain development) • Capacity development of value chain actors, service providers and educational institutions (capacity development) • Introduction/adaptation of tested and new knowledge management interventions in support of value chain development (knowledge management)

  13. Commodity Based Overview Dairy Production -60 PAs in E.S. selected as potential for dairy -36 PAs in W. S. zone -Mainly from local, a few Boran cattle and even fewer crosses of HolestienFresian breeds. Inputs and Services -Feed and supply of input

Dairy/Input and services continued -Holeta research institute supply boran and crosses of Holstein Frisian breeds to farmers -It is also supply forage seeds for farmers -Oil Processing Shops supply oilcake -The price of feed and veterinary service is escalating over time -The Livestock Agency takes big responsibility in facilitating inputs and services -Boranheifers brought from Gobe ranch were supplied to few farmers

Commodity Based Overview Cont’d Marketing -Butter marketing is important than fluid milk in East shoa (63-65% HH) -The eastern milk shed has good marketing potential as districts are located along main road -In Urban centers there are buyers for fluid milk -Meki, Mojo, Boti are located along milk collection stalls etc. -

  17. Market Contin’d • Local chees and butter are important source of cash ( W.S). • Cement Factories ( Muger, Dankote) are potential buyers of milk • Ambo University, cafeterias and restaurants are potential consumers • Men assemble bulk of butter while women dominate the cheese trade( WS)

  18. Commodity Based Overview Cont’d Beef Production • Farmers keep a few beef animals in intensive management system Inputs and Services -NGOs E.S, such as SEDA, CRS and world vision, build technical, organizational and infrastructure capacity of smallholder farmers -

Input Contin’d • Cooperative Union in E.S. help farmers to get organize in groups and fatten L.R. • Credit, training and feed are important though not available timely Marketing • Beef marketing follows season ( festivities- New year, Christmas, and Easter) • The National marketing system is in its nascent stage

  20. Commodity Based Overview Cont’d Small Ruminants Production • Farmers involved in improved management Production system is traditional -Food residue, atlla and other byproducts are given to shoats under the improved mgt. • The Majority of shoats are local

  21. Inputs and Services • Little research involvement • Private veterinary shops and vendors • L.A is the leading input supplier • Oromia Saving and credit give credit to Youth involved in Sheep fattening

Commodity Based Overview Cont’d Marketing -Intermediaries dominate the value chain -More than 90 of shoat in the improved management system are for sell (3 times) -Butcheries, restaurants, bars are the major buyers -Larger consumers include Higher learning Institutions, military establishments nd hospitals

  23. Commodity Based Overview Cont’d Poultry Production -Small scale, traditionally managed -99% are local breeds -Farmers keep both exotic and local breeds -Egg Production is minimal due to poor management

Inputs and Services • Both private (Alema)and public entities are supposed to involve in supplying drug, feed, pullets , hatcheries • The Livestock Agency at zonal and district level is the sole provider of inputs • Jimma Research and Jimma University that gives research outputs • In the selected districts a few hundred cross breed chickens are supplied to farmers through the Livestock Agency.

  25. Commodity Based Overview Cont’d Market -Depend on small scale traders -Shorter VL -Restaurants and hotels play the role of retailing in the poultry value chain

  26. Commodity Based Overview Cont’d Beekeeping Production -Dominated by traditional system of production • 90% of the hives are traditional • Average production from traditional hives is 4kg while from the transitional one it is 16 kg

  28. Commodity Overview Cont’d Marketing -Small retailers, tej( honey wine breweries) dominate the market - There are a few private processers in the country but not in the LIVES target zones -Little interest on wax production and processing

Opportunities -Availability of Natural Endowments -Water-rain, rivers, Plot of land, • Staffing ( assignment at dist., zone and local levels) • Experience of Farmers -Changes in the attitude of VC Actors ( Market, technology, • Increased numbers of VC Actors/partners • Opportunity for market for high value products

  32. Constraints • Less Involvement of the Private Sector • Weak Linkage of Public Sector, Private Sector and Producers • Absence of Plat forms for value chain actors to share knowledge and to collaborate • High staff mobility, unstable organizational structure etc. • Supply of pumps
