Alaska Association of Student Governments (AASG) Resolution Energy Alternatives for Schools Submitted by Ketchikan High School (KAYHI) October 07, 2006 Passed Unanimously by AASG 11/06
Be it resolved by the Alaska Association of Student Governments;
Whereas, the rising cost of fuel is becoming prohibitive for schools;
Whereas, the cost of fuel decreases the amount of money that administrators, students and teachers are able to use for supplies, extracurricular activities, travel and new equipment and technology;
Whereas, in the year 2004/05 Kayhi alone spent $188,000 on oil consumption;
Whereas, in the next year 2005/6 Kayhi spent $250,000 on oil consumption, a $62,000.00 increase;
Whereas, in this year 2006/7 oil consumption is projected to be $267,854.14, another $17, 857.14 increase; for a total increase in two years of $79,000.
Whereas, if schools were to start using alternative energy sources, they would be able to lower heating costs, giving more money back to education;
Whereas, there are many sources for energy;
Whereas, wind power has been and can become a more viable energy source in Alaska;
Whereas, waterpower is used and could be increased in other parts of Alaska;
Whereas, solar power could be stored during the summer months;
Whereas, tidal power, like Norway’s Statoil Plant, could be produced in all parts of coastal Alaska;
Whereas, alternative energy sources may be stored in giant batteries;
Therefore, be it resolved by the Alaska Association of Student Governments that AASG recommends that architects, engineers, and political entities who build schools in Alaska investigate more viable energy sources whilerenovating and building Alaskan schools.
