Common Characteristics • Body cavity- Coelomate • Type of organism- Free living, decomposer, and aquatic • Type of segmentation- Cephalization: an enlarged ganglion that acts as a brain. • Segmentation: This allows each part of the worm to be a little independent.
Life Cycle/Reproduction • Average life span- 4-8 years • 500-1,500 offspring per year • Reproduces sexually
Description of Habitat/Niche • Where do Earthworms live?- Mostly every where like in trees, in bark, under rocks, rivers, near by springs, and ponds. The most common is in Earth’s rich soil. In the summer they live in the top of the soil and create tunnels to wiggle in and out of. • What do Earthworms eat?- Decaying plant and animal matter and swallow soil with these things. Decaying matter is what earthworms need for nutrients and energy.
Special Characteristics • Physical Characteristics- The outer body wall is made up of two muscle layers. The outer layer is made up of a series of circles wrapped around the body, while the inner layer of muscle runs along the length of the body. • Earthworms that live deep in the soil may twist and coil their bodies or produce bad smelling or tasting fluids for defense. • Human use for earthworms is using them for bait while fishing.
