How do earthworms help the soil? • When earthworms dig though the soil, they make burrows. When it rains, the water goes though the burrows. The water can go to the roots of plants and give them water. When earthworms dig though the soil, they make it richer and make it easier to grow.
Where do worms live? Earthworms live in the soil. Sometimes they even live in water. They also live in the forest.
What do worms look like? • South American earthworms are huge. Some are 8 feet long. Some are even longer. Earthworms are small and slimy. They are pinkish reddish. Earthworms have tiny hairs on their body that help them move. Earthworms have pointed heads.
What do worms eat? • Earthworms eat leaves, stems, dead plants, and dead animals. Earthworms eat dirt when they dig though the soil.
Worm facts • Earthworms have five hearts. Earthworms can open their mouths big enough to swallow a leaf. Earthworms breath though their skin. Some earthworms are so small they can’t be seen without a microscope.
A Funny Story • A worm was carried into the house by the cats. He tried to get away so he crawled into the man’s laptop and caused the computer to blow up. The repair man found a fired worm that was real in the computer!
A earthworms senses • Earthworms don’t have any eyes, ears or a nose. They have little brains. Earthworm’s nerve cells can sense objects, light, and movements. They also have a nerve cell on its body that helps the worms fell their way though the soil.
The lifecycle of an Earthworm • First, there is a cocoon with some earthworms in it. Baby earthworms come out a little while later. They go right into the soil. They eat as much as they can and become young earthworms. They become adult earthworms when they get segments. Then they get with a different adult earthworm. Then the lifecycle starts all over again.
Earthworms Predators • Earthworms get eaten all the time. Snakes eat earthworms. So do birds, moles, toads, foxes, bears, beetles, centipedes, leeches, slugs, and flat worms.
Too Hot, too Cold • When earthworms get too hot, they turn pale pink. When they hibernate, if they don’t get deep enough, they get too hot and die.
